Dog food expenses MP backed by local party

AN MP’s constituency party has given her a unanimous vote of confidence after she bought dog food on expenses.

Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan said the £4.74 purchase was a mistake which she was “mortified” by.

It was among the revelations by The Daily Telegraph last week.

For an exclusive article by Mrs Gillan on her expenses see tomorrow’s Bucks Free Press.

A statement by the Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association said: “The executive council of Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association met with Cheryl Gillian MP to discuss MP's expenses.

“Cheryl gave a full account of her expenses and whilst not supporting the actions of other members of the house explained the effect that the current publicity was having on the whole apparatus of government.

“Cheryl indicated that all of her claims had been made by her personally.

“She offered a full apology for the embarrassment she had caused and indicated that she was mortified by her mistake.”

It said: “Cheryl was given a unanimous vote of confidence by the executive.

“After a full discussion of the issues it was agreed that the current Parliamentary expenses system was were fatally flawed.

“The proposals put forward by David Cameron were endorsed as a practical and sensible approach.”

Is the Free Press ever going to ask her some difficult questions? In terms of tomorrow's exclusive it's disappointing that you did not insist on a proper interview with her rather than offering her what amounts to some free advertising space. If you are interviewing her as well then apologies!

I don't know how MPs claim their expenses, but in my business you have to fill out a form (briefly stating what the claim is for) and then you have to attach the receipt. How could you possibly do that by accident? Did she think a receipt for'Winalot' was an invoice from her campaign manager?

That's EXACTLY what they had to do Angela M

Seems she "accidentally" claimed, just as others "accidentally" claimed for mortgage repayments for fully repaid mortgages, or furniture for the "wrong" home.

As I have said elsewhere, I don't see much wrong with the rules themselves, just the (extremely) loose way they were interpreted by the MPs and the Claims Office.

I bet Cameron doesn't sack her. The only Conservative politicians he is getting rid of are the ones who had no intention of standing at next general election anyway!

Personally I'd like to know which MP's voted for their expenses not to be made public as I'm fairly sure that they will be the ones that are currently being exposed by The Telegraph.

I am so angry about all the polititions ripping-off the taxpayer and I intend to register my protest at the polls on June 4. I had considered voting for UKIP but then I read of Nigel Farage boasts regarding how much he had raked in as a UKIP MEP:'£2 million in expenses'.
I shall be looking elsewhere for an alternative Party to vote for. UKIP are as bad as the rest.

Some Local councillors receive very high expenses, maybe the Daily Telegraph could look there as well.

There is NO transparency locally either otherwise we would have known about the £5 million in Icelandic Banks before the money was lost.

With Labour and the Conservatives stonewalling for damage limitation, the Lib Dems are the only ones coming out of the political mess with any credibility.

Interesting to read the Free Press this morning but as feared the coverage of our local MPs was basically unedited tosh with no attempt made to report the views of others including candidates from the other parties.

Cheryl Gillan says she is "so sorry that any action of mine has caused anger..." putting the dog food fiasco down to "the pressures of time and work." It's an interesting defence that I'm sure no-one else in any other walk of life would be able to get away with.

And is it just me or does this apology fall a little short. Then as we've all said in these blog comments there are much bigger issues than the dog food. Presumably she still thinks it was acceptable for her constituents and everyone else to subsidise her non dog food shopping in London. Why precisely?

Also nothing at all in the piece attemptng to justify the high car travel claims from Bucks to Westminster on top of the 90k over 4 years for the Battersea apartment. Our local MPs appear to have learnt nothing from the last few weeks.

Can anyone tell me why we are all having to pay these bills for someone's third property and someone who could easily commute to work like the rest of us? Since 2001 she's claimed over £150,000 for this flat and still it goes on...

What rubbish.

Cameron set up the independent panel that has unearthed and fired his own MPs; he has ordered others to stand down and he has said he supports police action against any MP deserving it.

Nick Clegg, on the other hand, has done what? Nothing at all. Oh yes, he's used the whole thing to demand a voting system change to PR... now which party would beenfit the most there? Hmm, let me think...
