Users critical of Wycombe pool closure during warm weather

Swimmers bemoan loss of Holywell Mead pool Swimmers bemoan loss of Holywell Mead pool

SWIMMERS have expressed their frustration at the closure of Holywell Mead open air swimming pool, as the country is bathed in sunshine.

The open-air swimming pool in High Wycombe was permanently closed by councillors in budget cuts in February.

A steering group has submitted a business plan to Wycombe District Council and hopes to be able to reopen it, but the earliest it will happen is next summer.

Suzanne Grant, who has swum at the pool in The Rye each year since it opened in 1957, branded the situation “ridiculous”.

She added: “How ridiculous is it that we are having some good weather and Holywell Mead pool is closed. It doesn't make sense somehow.

“Our steering group is trying hard with meetings every week to change the situation for next year and the year after that for the pool to be reopened.”

Among plans put forward by the steering group are a building a sliding roof to cover the pool in bad weather, and opening it all-year-round.

In a letter sent to the Bucks Free Press Elizabeth Rolfe, whose brother-in-law built the original filter plant, criticised the decision to close it.

She said: “The Holywell Mead swimming pool is closed and wonderful opportunities for family outings over half term to swim and sunbathe, have been lost. No money coming in, and maybe a job or two lost.

“I think I speak for the majority of people in High Wycombe who would value a pool with a roof which can come into use when necessary, so swimming can take place throughout the year.”

At the meeting in February when councillors ratified the closure, Councillor Tony Green, then in charge of leisure, said the pool was not "economically viable" and the council had to focus cash in other places. He added it would "remain a community facility".

Would you have used the pool during the recent warm weather if it were still open? Leave your comments below.

And just a thought,as I understand it, the monies paid to the previous operator of Handy Cross as an 'out of court' settlement would have kept Holywell Mead open for a number of years.

The Rye is Wycombe's greatest asset - a huge green carpet with tennis, football, boating and children's playgrounds, right on the edge of the town centre. No other town has anything quite like it. Its most popular facility in the summer - the swimming pool, used by thousands of people & kids.

Ever mindful of their responsibility to local people to maintain these facilities, WDC closes down the pool, just to save a few tens of thousands of pounds - peanuts when set against their enormous budget.

How the heck do we get a council that will do what local people WANT?

With images like that I am glad they have closed this pool!
Where was the health & safety notices saying "No Jumping" and "No Bombing".
If they were visible the life guards should have been sacked!

Last weekend, with beautiful weather, the pool would have been packed. The decision to close it in the face of massive public outcry is appalling. Out of touch Tony Green who said 'not enough people care about the pool' should resign in shame.

It's a shame that the local yoof have decided to spray graffiti on the building. First time i've ever seen that.

I should imagine that with the weather as it is, that the pool would be quite popular at the moment.

I believe the council are wrong here, this a marvelous facility which many would enjoy. A public amenity such as this should be developed and then supported by the residents; however there is vandalism and thuggery to consider, is the Rye a safe place these days ?

I would love to see this open during the summer, and if a roof could be constructed throughout all other seasons.
We Wycombe residents deserve this.

I saw that film.

Didn't it end with 3 people murdered and a dog executed and thrown in the deep end together with a motor cycle ?

Don't start giving people ideas ; could have unforseen circumstances

The Judge for a councillor or MP? You have to be joking! Firstly you have to have people vote for you and I see little support for the judge on the BFP website let alone with the voters. Secondly, he would have to do "The Knowledge" for High Wycombe as he comes from Stokenchurch and obviously knows very little about the geography in High Wycombe - calling the ski slope Wycombe Heights! Nice name - pity it was already taken by the golf course!
