Roof collapses at Wycombe snooker hall

A MAN has been pulled from the wreckage of a High Wycombe building after the roof collapsed on him.

Firefighters, police and ambulance staff rushed to The Hurricane Room pool club in Corporation Street after reports the first floor of the building collapsed and trapped a worker inside at about 2.31pm.

The man is not believed to have suffered serious injuries and the emergency services are currently at the scene.

The club will release a statement later today, Friday.

The trapped man was believed to have been on the phone to a friend when the ceiling collapsed.

Witness Moira Gomes said: “We were in the building adjacent to the Hurricane Room and were very concerned – we came out onto the balcony and saw the building had collapsed.

“The emergency services have been going in and out of the building to assess the damage, the road is still cordoned off and it looks like the whole centre part of the roof has collapsed.”

For full eyewitness accounts and more pictures see tomorrow's Bucks Free Press.

Insp Keith Thompson said: “Police are currently helping to ensure public safety at Hurricane Rooms, Corporation Street, where a ceiling of a building has collapsed.

"As a precaution, Corporation Street has been closed off between the High Street and Castle Street until further notice while the building is being inspected by Wycombe District Council. A man received minor injuries."

Corporation Street was closed for more than an hour while emergency services attended the scene but it was re-opened at about 4.10pm.

It was one of those modern new-fangled flat roofs that collapsed. If it had been a proper roof with rafters and tiles no doubt this would not have happened!

Ivor and Fasil,

Do you know anything about building. A truss roof "new fangled modern roof" wouldn't make any difference. The roof has collapsed becasue it is not built or maintained correctly. A rafter roof with tiles is just as liable to collapse under the same circumstances. I use that pool hall every week - i just thank my lucky stars none one else was in there as this could have happened at any time. The building company who installed the roof should be held accountable.

Could all the building work going in around it be a part of why it collapsed

Maybe now the local people will get some sleep until its repaired , because this establishment was given a licence by Wycombe District Council to open till 4 or 5am

bakerbill:

The pool hall is in the town centre. Anyone objecting to noise at late hours would have to be incredibly dumb to move into a town centre!

The roof has collapsed because it is not built or maintained correctly.

How do you maintain a roof?

I water mine every winter and dry it every summer.

Is that enough?

Kadoogan

Many (Not Dum ) people lived in the town centre for many years before this establishment was allowed to stay open till 5am by the council. They may now get a descent nights sleep till it reopens .
