New doors for High Wycombe Fire Station

Javeria Ali Javeria Ali

FIVE new sets of doors will be put up at High Wycombe Fire Station, just a year after fire chiefs ruled out replacing the existing doors.

The new roller doors will be installed during July and August as part of a £60,000 refurbishment of the site, which was branded “ghastly” by 13-year-old Javeria Ali last year.

She wrote to the Bucks Free Press last May saying: "Even though I am only 13 I still have opinions about the town I have lived in all my life.

"I like most things about High Wycombe but one thing I absolutely detest is the ghastly fire station that you see every time you come down Marlow Hill.

"I think the council should gather the decency and actually paint it red!"

At the time Roy Harold, an area manager with Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, ruled out spending £50,000 for replacements as the future of the site was unclear.

However, Mr Harold now says the works will go ahead as they have “exhausted” discussions with Wycombe District Council on a potential new site as the redevelopment of the town centre takes shape.

He said: “Following our latest meeting with the council, we are planning a modest redevelopment of the current site to meet the needs of both organisations in the short term.

“With the current economic climate in mind, we intend to get the maximum life out of as many of our fixtures and fittings as possible.

“For example, the most expensive element of our refurbishment – the five new appliance bay doors – will be coming with us to a new site at some point in the future.”

He added discussions had been ongoing about relocating the service to a site in Desborough Road, but this had now been ruled out as it would have an adverse impact on getting to incidents in the town and the M40.

Isn't this the same Fire Station that is included in the grand plan for demolition?

I dooooon't belieeeeeeve it!

I suppose it means the fire service will be able to claim more in compensation when they are compulsorily acquired by WDC!

All funded by the taxpayer.

Just goes to show that one well written letter can have more effect that the tiresome 'bleating on' about the doors in some posts here...

Well done, Javeria, for speaking your mind so concisely.

Keep writing!

The reasoning behind this decision is quite clearly stated at www.bucksfire.gov.uk

The station cannot move "for the time being" - a phrase for some reason omitted from the BFP story - which is why we can now go ahead with the doors. As the story says, we will take the doors with us and fit them at the new station at some point in the future.

Surely the doors only need repainting not replacing!

The only time the doors would need replacing was if there was a danger of them failing to open in which case they should have been replaced years ago!

Does each door really cost £10,000? The door for my garage never cost anywhere near that!

Come On parcelman - I know doors of this type can be expensive but £7500K - that's £7.5 million!!!!!!!

Let me know when it's time to replace them and I will quote you less than £1 million.

As I said a year ago , these doors only need a good clean , waxing and/or oiling.

The 'bloom' (faded paintwork ) that is visible can be removed with a sponge and a bucket of warm soapy water.

Just go up to it and wet your finger and draw it across the surface. It will leave a 'clean' red streak.

Don't do this if anyone is watching or you might get charged with damaging the Service's property.

Still it's only tax payers' money and there's plenty more where that came from.
