Lib Dems slammed over "local homes for local people" call

Lib Dems slammed over "local homes for local people" call Lib Dems slammed over "local homes for local people" call

A PLANNING chief tore into Liberal Democrats for calling for more “local homes for local people” – after the party opposed major housing plans.

Conservative cabinet member Jean Teesdale spoke out after Lib Dem Trevor Snaith asked what she was doing to “deliver local homes for local people”.

There is a below average number of 20 to 30-year-olds in Wycombe district he said – and warned they faced being “forced out of area due to lack of affordable starter homes”.

Cllr Teesdale pointed to Lib Dem election pledges – featured in the Bucks Free Press –to oppose homes (see link, bottom of story).

Thousands are earmarked for five sites by 2026 – Terriers Farm, Gomm Valley, Abbey Barn north and south and Slate Meadow, Bourne End.

Cllr Teesdale said: “I do get confused, Councillor Snaith.

“Your party not so long ago in the Bucks Free Press were saying they would fight new homes, they would stop us from having new homes.

“Now you are begging us on bended knees to see what we can do to change the policy. I find that very confusing.”

She added: “I think your party should get together and decide what you want – local homes for local people or if it is one of your election ploys you get around election time.

“I would very much appreciate if you can make it clear so the Bucks Free Press can get a clear picture of where the Lib Dems stand.”

Cllr Teesdale said the council was “doing everything in our power” to find homes.

The Government has demanded councils decide where homes can be built, which has led to the five-site plan.

WDC can demand developers hand these over for affordable housing as a condition of it granting planning permission.

Yet she said: “We can’t do anything where people are buying private housing. That is open to whoever wants to buy them. We cannot stop that.”

Cllr Teesdale disclosed how many affordable homes had been built in the last three years.

These are: 208 in 2006/07, 222 in 2007/08 and 206 in 2008/09.

The Lib Dems lost a seat on the county council in the June 4 poll. The party now has 11 councillors to the Conservatives’ 46.

Cllr Snaith and fellow district council member Ray Farmer hoped to oust sitting Tory councillors in Ryemead, Tylers Green & Loudwater, home of Gomm Valley.

I thought we had affordable housing and that it is called 'High Wycombe'

Indeed, finally the wheels are falling off this joke of a LibDem movement.

Jumping on any campaign bandwagen to try and please everyone all of the time is catching up with them.

Some advice for you: find a policy and have the balls to stick with it.

If you think housing in Wycombe is affordable, you not living in the real world mate.

Oh, I've just seen you're living in Penn, so I guess I'm right!

Accomodation in HW is very affordable. Developers are falling over themselves to offload product and even now are helping to procure debt for buyers. I can't see how anyone can say housing in HW is expensive!

We're living in one of the most expensive areas in the country.
Youngsters go off to Uni come back saddled with debt and move back in with parents.
Meanwhile large housing developments have been built in Wycombe which were bought by investors and rented out to commuters. You only have to visit these estates at the weekends to see how true this is. Most of these estates are empty at weekends.

Ive got two teenagers living with me -- cant afford anything in High Wycombe -- being snapped up by commuters from London who dont care a toss about the local area.
We need more affordable homes ringfenced for local people

Loads of houses
Loads of traffic
Loads of cutbacks
The people of Wycombe need to see money being spent on the residents and local people -- we need local homes for local people not commuter homes

What when they can bleat about how they would do things different, knowing that there is a snowflakes chance of them ever being in power?

Snaith is a real politician.

1. Doesn't really give a flying fig.
2. Loves the spotlight.
3. Says anything to get votes.
4. Full of his own self importance - have a chat with him sometime and find out for yourself.
5. I could go on and on ... ...

Conservatives are a shambles. It is no wonder they don't tell anyone their policies. Everytime they do it blows up in Camerons face! lol

Wycombe Lib Dems hold onto County Seat.

Wycombe Lib Dems win Totteridge By-Election overtaking both Labour and the Conservatives.

Nationally Conservatives picking up seats so why are Wycombe Conservatives failing to match this?

National Lib Dem share of the vote ahead of Labour!

More than happy lol!

From what i can see its the Torys on the council that fail to respect the views of the people of High Wycombe.
They are arrogant and uncaring.
We need more Lib Dem councillors to speak for the people of Wycombe putting needs of local residents first

Cllr Teesdale and Torys are y to build more and more homes in High Wycombe -- unfortunatelly they are not for local people. Many are being snapped up by
investors who are renting out to commuters

Also from what i can see very few homes are built in our villages -- we need more local homes for local people across the district not just the Town which has become a dumping ground for apartments and high density flats !!!

Call me dense, but didn't we just have local elections?

If the lib dems are that wonderful, why didn't they get more seats?

Maybe you know something I don't.
OR perhaps the electorate can see that the lib dem's manifesto is made up of promises and moonshine.
I read it and it horrified me - perhaps others felt the same?

You are obviously easily pleased then.
The lib dems lost a seat did they not?

How many did the tories lose?
Don't get me wrong, we need a strong opposition but lets not kid ourselves that the lib dems are that.
They would have to have a lot more seats to be a strong opposition.

I've never seen one of these 'ghost estates' that is supposedly empty at weekends!
Anyway, the answer is simple, 'WORK HARDER- EARN MORE'. Stop whingeing and devote your energies to looking after yourselves and your families, not blaming others for your problems because they work harder.

Do you watch the TV?
Do you read the papers?

Are you aware that there is a recession on and firms are going bust everyday and there is not enough money to pay people more no matter how much harder they work?
Are you aware that graduates can't get ANY jobs - let alone jobs that they are qualified to do?
Are you a Daily Mail reader?

Typical mentality of the values of a born Tory ---
Stuff the rest im alright with no real consideration for the community or understanding and support for those less fortunate than yourself

Yes, I do watch TV and am accutely aware of the global slowdown. I was also an unemployed graduate once (in 1990) and that was with a proper degree from a proper university. I started with nothing and worked bloody hard, creating opportunities where there weren't any, having a cheeky 'go' to get a job and then progress within a job and studying at night school simultaneously. Starting at 5am with studying before work, then night school after, then bed at midnight. I have full sympathy for unemployed people, but was stating that houses in HW are affordable, there is no need for any more (which will destroy our beautiful countryside) and am utterly convinced that whingers should get on their bikes and look for work and opportunities.
I am doing well thanks. You can too.

I agree that we should not be building houses on Green Belt land, just to satisfy a "demand". Create more houses, you create more demand as more people move into the area.

Try and utilise the empty properties or build on brown site land.

Darren Hayday- when are you going to apologise for stating in your last election leaflet that you would keep Council Tax down whilst keeping services.

Yet you and other Conservatives voted to increase Council Tax and cut services.

I to have done well also.
However i believe in putting back into community and supporting those less fortunate to have a better lifestyle -- it fundimental to humanitarian and many religious values

On this one i think we agree to differ.
Kind Regards

If we don't need anymore houses, why are there over 2,000 people on the council housing waiting list at WDC?

I would like to see a new village created out of town and stop cramming more and more houses into the existing town with its lack of infrastructure, inadequate roads and facilities stretched to the limit.

There was an option for an eco village in Saunderton but nimby Conservatives instead decided to build a computer warehouse and dump all the houses in the Town!

Wycombe Marsh Rebel says...

Why aren't there more developments to the west of the town...like Saunderton for example??? It seems WDC just want to keep dumping estates on the east of the town, without improving the access routes.

We do need local homes for local people, but instead the Tories will put 40 flats in the space of 1 house & sell them at a very high price to commuters. Its no wonder young families from Wycombe are having to move away.

Monty Python was before my time I'm afraid.
I don't understand all of this 'anti-commuter' nonsense. Commuters are locals too, they just work somewhere else!
If more housing really is needed (which I doubt) there are ample central brownfield sites available rather than the green belt.
