Workman injured in High Wycombe university plunge

AN investigation is under way into how a workman fell nearly 20 feet down a lift shaft at a “Gateway” university building in High Wycombe.

The subcontractor was left with a broken leg after falling six metres down the void from the first floor of the Buckinghamshire New University building in Queen Alexandra Road on Friday.

Two fire crews from High Wycombe were called in to help paramedics rescue the man after his fall in the new building at about 8.50am.

Barbara Cahalane, a spokesman for BAM Construction, which are undertaking the £48m project, said an investigation has now been launched into the incident.

She added: “A sub contractor fell six metres down a lift shaft on Friday and broke their leg.

“We have a full investigation under way to determine what happened and proper instructions have been given to the health and safety executive.”

Anne Whitehouse, a spokesman for the university, said they still expect the building to be up and running in time for the arrival of new students on September 21.

The new building, which has been under construction since January 2008, will feature new dance studios, sports facilities and hi-tech music and video editing suites.

I cant beleive they sold two nice campuses for this hideous architecture - it is an eye sore - sore to look at - they should have gone to Dubai and got some inspiration there on how to build something that is pleasing to the eye

I notice the BFP hasn't said where this poor man ended up. Wexham Park or Stoke Mandeville? Not Wycombe Hospital which can only give a paracetamol or put a plaster on a cut.

Wycombe hospital is a joke.
Town of this size needs full NHS service.

Also in Wycombe we speak english so please have staff that we all can understand.

How can you say this building is an eyesore...? I personally think the Gateway looks fantastic - its a very contemporary state of the art build and is going to aid alot of students in their degrees! There are SO many other parts of Wycombe that are eyesores...it actually shows up alot of the other buildings in town!

I do hope the person that was injured makes a full and quick recovery - which is actually what this story was about!

Everyone i've spoke too thinks the building looks tosh, and they are right, it does look rubbish! The way it connects too the old building is awful... should knock the whole thing down and re-build it

Mrs A is right - the important thing is the chappie recovers. And they find out what went wrong so it is very much less likely, if not impossible, for it to happen again. Always a risky area on a building site, a lift shaft - although if the place is opening at the end of next month the lifts should be nearly finished.
.
The reports on Wycombe hospital care ability are wildly different - from very good to apalling. Personal experience certainly doesn't fall into very good category, unfortunately.
.
The recessed white facade of the new building looks a bit like a 3D representation of a 4D cube, except for the unnecessary bit at the bottom.
.
Now we need to get rid of the grubby old monstrosity next to it thats been there since whenever, and put another clean modern architectural education facility like this one as a gateway to the modern High Wycombe.

Not sure how iworld can claim that Bucks Uni sold two nice campuses! Clearly he or she didn't spend much time at either place. Chalfont was in nice surroundings, but many of the buildings were poor and the location was totally impractical for students. Wellesbourne was a complete and utter dump.

I'm the first to admit that the new building isn't very attractive from the outside, but inside it will be pretty impressive. It does make the old building behind it look pretty bad though. Hopefully they will do something to smarten that up a bit.

Hope the injured guy recovers quickly.

You are Correct about Chalfont , Wellesbourne (both run-down).
.
You are also right about the frontage and dishevelled bedraggled rear of the college - reminds of the old expression - Fur coat and no Knickers.

It is an eye sore with those strong contrasting colours. It will be even more of an eye sore in a couple of years when the white has turned to a nice yellow/beige and the blue has become turquoise.

It is not a pleasing or state of the art design, I think the architect strongly needs some influence on buildings with good design. It would have looked better being completely cuboid and in grey.
