POLICE were called to Beaconsfield MP Dominic Grieve’s office today after he was allegedly assaulted by a constituent.

The MP said the woman, in her 30s, accused Mr Grieve of being “corrupt” and “racist” when they spoke about a planning matter at his weekly surgery.

He said there was “pushing and shoving” and he had to call the police after the disturbance at the Beaconsfield Conservatives office in Aylesbury End.

She had attended the Conservative MP's surgery with her two young children.

Yet the Asian woman had already called the police to accuse the MP – who is not taking police action – of “discrimination”, he said. Thames Valley Police confirmed this.

Mr Grieve – widely backed by constituents over his expense claims – said: “It is the first time anything like that has happened.

“Morning surgeries in Beaconsfield tend to go on in a quiet fashion. This is quite unusual.”

The drama began at about 11am when the MP met the woman to discuss the planning matter, which is dealt with by the district council. Parliament only sets overall policy.

When contacted by the Free Press, Mr Grieve said: “I told her there is nothing I can do to help.

“If they wish to challenge the decision they will have to go to the High Court for a judicial review.”

She then left but remained in the waiting area “shouting I was racist and ringing people up” Mr Grieve said.

It was then that she called the police, he said.

She then “burst in” about 15 minutes later when he was seeing another constituent, the MP said. It was then that he was assaulted.

Mr Grieve, a barrister, said: “I rang the police and said ‘I’m very sorry, I cannot run the morning surgery with this person creating so much mayhem’.”

But he said: “I don’t see it as a big issue, it is all in a day’s work.”

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: “I wanted to see him and I wanted to speak to him about the planning problem.”

She said she was “really really shaking” after the incident. She said: “It was a shocking experience.”

Police spokesman Marianne Shaw said: “We can confirm that an assault took place this morning.

“However, no charges have been brought and there is no evidence at this time to suggest that any racist language was used.”
