A FOUR piece rock group from Wycombe who have fused the sounds of their inspirations Deep Purple and Blondie hope their unique tones will seal victory at a battle for unsigned bands tonight.
TigerTrapp, made up of four teenagers from West Wycombe, High Wycombe, Princes Risborough, will go up against 14 other hopefuls at the regional final of the Surface Unsigned competition - which began with hundreds of acts.
The band reached the final stage after playing in three rounds, thanks to a combination of judges and audience voting .
Having already established themselves as one of the top 15 groups in London and the South East, the foursome have their sights set on the national final.
If they are triumphant they will perform at a two day event at the Indigo 2 - a club at the O2 Arena in London next month.
Alex Brownlee, 18, the keyboards player, said the style of his band’s music was hard to describe but had likened to two acts in particular.
“It’s kind of hard pop rock, a cross between Deep Purple and Blondie,” he said.
“We are definitely unique, I haven’t heard any other band that sounds like us. A lot of the bands we are competing against are the average guitar rock/metal bands but we’re doing something completely different.”
This stand-out style has been a key factor in the group’s progression in the competition so far, he said.
The other three members - singer Leah McFarlane, drummer Lindsay Horler and Henry Martin, bass player are also 18.
Alex, who is soon to start to begin a history degree at University College London, said: “Our current ambition is to win this competition. We’re pretty surprised because we thought we’d never get through the first and second round but now we are really hoping we get through.”
Winners tend to get voted in by the greatest number of fans who turn up at the venues and Alex said the competition has surprised them how dedicated their following has become.
“We never thought we could get our fans to come all the way to London for each stage,” he said.
The band have just recorded three songs.
Among their best known songs so far are Always awake, Sam, give it all you’ve got and Spat me out.
They will also perform a cover version of Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell during their 25 minute slot.
Should they win tonight - for the fourth time since they entered the contest - they will collect £5,000 cash and also get 40 hours of studio time and a photo shoot.
