Wake-up call from Amersham to world leaders

DEMONSTRATORS gathered in Amersham and more than a thousand cities around the world to send a deafening wake-up call on climate change to world leaders today.

More than thirty Buckinghamshire residents who gathered near the memorial gardens were asked to set their alarm clocks for 12.18pm – a reference to the next Climate Change conference in Copenhagen, which takes place on 18 December.

When the alarms went off the clocks and mobile phones were raised in the air.

The 'wake-up call' took place in over 2,200 areas in 128 countries across the world.

The global event was organised by Avaaz.org, an international civic organisation which promotes activism on issues such as climate change, human rights and religious conflicts.

Amongst the residents was William Whippet, a greyhound owned by Lady Jean Johnson.

Host Russ Fleming said he was there on behalf of the animal kingdom, and “to represent the speed we are lacking in our political efforts”.

Cllr Martin King of Amersham Town Council said he attended as he was keen to demonstrate his personal support for action against climate change.

One demonstrator, Samantha Free from Amersham, said she was keen to make the town a “transition town”, where motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern – in this case, Amersham's response to climate change.

Shirley Judges from Great Missenden said she is concerned for her grandson and the world he will live in when he is older.

She said: “People should be taking the action that is needed now.”

Wow, 30 residents out of thousands, yeah, i'm sure the world leaders are listening.

Isn't it interesting how these people are screaming "save the planet", yet they all have mobile phones, drive cars, use mass produced megaphones and talk enough hot air to wipe out a pack of Polar Bears, h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e-s.

Well Wayneo I was one of the so called hypocrites that took part in that demonstration.
For your information My mobile phone must be 8 years old and wont be changed till it breaks! I only holiday in the UK, my electricity supply is on a green tariff, I buy organic vegetables, I shop at the small local stores, I dont waste food, I use bath water to flush my toilet, I have a water meter, I buy second hand clothes etc. Sometimes I get confused as to why I do all of this maybe its because I care!
Your comments suggest to me that you have no concern for future generations, animals, wildlife etc
Have you no children or intend to have children in the future that you might want to leave a better world for them?
Mass produced Megaphones, are you serious!!! How many Megaphones have you seen in your life time.
If there is any chance of getting the message across to someone like you we need more of them.
Maybe you should organize a destroy the planet flash mob and invite your mate Jeremy Clarkson that way you are sure to get a bigger turn out than we did.
And just to cheer you up unfortunately I have got a van that I use for work.
