Ann Summers to open in Eden, High Wycombe

An Ann Summers store An Ann Summers store

SEX toys and lingerie retailer Ann Summers is to open a store in High Wycombe.

The firm is recruiting for the new store, to open on November 25 between Claire’s and Rush Hair and opposite New Look in Eden.

It could not say how many jobs have been created.

Eden director Daniel Tomkinson said he was “delighted” by the news.

He said: “We’re always looking to add new popular retail brands to Eden and Ann Summers is the latest of twelve new store openings so far this year.”

Rev Nicky Skipworth, a community missioner at All Saints Church in the town said she did not expect churches to oppose the shop, which does not need a sex establishment licence.

She said: “We are an awful lot less prudish than people would think we are. The human body is a marvellous thing.”

Having a shop like this move in just shows the levels to which the town has sunk.

It comes as no surprise to me to hear that the powers that be who run the complex are delighted with the news. Let's face it such a shop will be most suited to the hideous complex.
~
The ones I feel sorry for are those who actually require the items such a shop sells.....

It's probably the bearings on the motor that's causing the vibration.
.
Electrolux are prone to this allegedly.
When they get on fast spin , they can go off with a bang.

I dont mind the shop coming to the town, but was there any need to put it in an area of Eden close to childrens shops? You have build-a-bear and the sweet shop to one side and claires accessories the other......i am not a prude but please, some common sense

You are a bitter person aren't you.
Eden is thriving - sorry to disappoint.

Oh and if "the complex" is so hideous, do us all a favour and don't go there as all you are doing is causing yourself stress.
Vote with your feet and leave it alone instead of grumbling on and on and on...
We know you don't like it... OMG we get the blinking point.
Now put up or shut up!

Presumerably then, you object to La Senza as that has racy underwear in its window.

Anne Summers is very discreet - it has underwear at the front of the shop and the "toys" are at the back.
So I doubt any child would even notice.

Whats the big deal? The shop window is no more raunchy than la senza and all the really naughty stuff is kept out of sight.

As someone said earlier we have more to worry about with drug dealers and drunks.

Im not sure why Ivor would feel sorry for anyone that has to use this store, get with the times.

In a society where violence on tv is widely accepted but sex still isnt then we need more places like this on the highstreet to readdress the balance.

Ohh he doesn't feel sorry for them really... he is just jealous!

But yes - Anne Summers really does not pose a threat to our morals....
I think it is because it was originally for women only. Indeed the parties still are.
People like Ivor find female sexuality frightening.

I dont object to La Senza being in the town, or Ann Summers but the displays of 'naughty' underwear are not really necessary for all to see....after all they are UNDER wear not OUTER wear !!!!!!!!!

Eris says...

To be honest, I am not too bothered about Ann Summers; I attend the parties frequently enough to meet my Ann Summers needs.
.
However, I see no issue in the display of underwear, and, as has been mentioned, the sex aids are discreet at the back of the shop. The Ann Summers shops I have been into have also been fairly good at policing that section to make sure everyone is over 18.
.
House of Fraser, M&S, Debenhams all have underwear sections and often have underwear on display in their windows.
.
I can honestly not see why people have an issue with underwear being on display; it harms no one, and I would honestly worry about someone who is offended by the sight of a matching bra & thong set, it implies a level of sheltered-ness that I do not consider to be healthy.
.
As for children, I have never met a child who gets traumatised by the sight of underwear. I can only assume any children who react in such a way have been brought up to believe that underwear and sex are bad things that should be kept secret. Again, not a healthy viewpoint in my opinion.

Hi kazza
.
I have to ask, what do you think would be a suitable shop window for a shop that sells underwear?
.
Window displays exist to entice in the customer. Bookshops display the latest best seller; I used to work in Ottakars, and a lot of effort went into the displays there. Homeware shops displays their finest and most eye catching pots and pans, so why should underwear shops not display underwear?
.
Do you think Ann Summas and La Senza should be restricted by the same rules that govern hard core sex shops? Blacked out windows and a constantly shut door? Just in case someone in the street catches a glimpse of red lace and is offended?
.
I adore pretty underwear and matching sets, I feel so much more confident when I am wearing them. I like the knowledge that I am as smartly dressed under my clothes as I am on view. If I had to go into a shop as described above to buy my underwear, do you not think that my enjoyment would be lessened? That instead of revelling in pretty underwear, I would start to feel embarrased and ashamed that I am buying it?
.
If your issue is the sex aids then I can sort of understand that, but as I have said, that area is monitored. But at the moment you seem to be demonising the sale and display of underwear, which strikes me as being just a little ridiculous.

Oh for goodness sake.... what on earth is wrong with underwear being displayed! I find it offensive that someone objects to bras and knickers being displayed. Are you infering that the female body is taboo in some way?
Perhaps we should ban ladies underwear..
Do you have a problem with female sexuality too Kazza?

I don't approve of public displays of barbeque equipment and tobacco products.

We shouldn't be intimidated by any questions our children may put to us.

It's down to our skill as parents to come up with the right and appropriate answers.

I agree. Ann Summers is discreet *and* very tame. It's practically respectable now. There are enough images of women in their underwear about anyway - I've buxom beauties on men's magazines eyeing the children's rack in Smiths for many years... In France it's much more explicit.

I think you are geographically incorrect , vl.
The shop 'Feathers' was at the junction of Bridge St and Desborough Rd.
.
It closed down about 3 months ago and was next to the unlamented now-departed 'Second-hand City' which is now the Busby Insurance offices. The Tuck-in cafe opposite re-opened about the same time.
.
The changes are all tied into the shop leases and development plans in that area.

You are correct Pcc
.
But I also don't like the garish Walt-Disney-style shop fronts and displays in the Kentucky Fried Chicken and MacDonalds outlets.
.
It's not just the look of the places, unappetizing (to me) smells of cooking/boiling/gril
ling or torrents of multi-coloured discarded litter expelled by these places.
.
It's also the distended facial expressions of the the 'clients' as they force gargantuan but over-priced portions of burnt dead animal portions (and worse) into their bodily orifices. And all on public display
.
But that's only my humble perception and opinion. Am I over-reacting ?
.
Regards
