Frogmoor hotel plans given thumbs up

PLANS to build a new 124-bed hotel above the Chilterns Shopping Centre have been given the green light by Wycombe District Council.

The proposed four-floor development will feature a new restaurant, which will open out on to Frogmoor for outside dinning, provide extra parking space and create around 20 jobs.

Three retail units in the Chilterns Centre, clothing stores Blue Ice and Sapphire, and the derelict Wimpy restaurant, will make way for a reception area, offices and toilets.

While the dis-used Windsor House offices above the shopping complex will be part demolished for three floors of guest bedrooms and hotel facilities, including a laundry room and staff room.

Ground floor retailers in the Chilterns Centre will not be affected by the development.

Melanie Williams, town centre manager from the High Wycombe Town Centre Partnership called the planning decision a “positive move for the town”.

She said: “It's a positive development for Frogmoor, there is a requirement for a hotel in this area and anything that brings in and keeps more people in the town for a longer period is a positive move for the town.”

Fran Chick, director of planning agents CSJ Brooke Smith said: “The proposals will result in a positive visual enhancement to the shopping centre and the conservation area and will increase local employment opportunities. It’s an excellent result all round.”

Developers will need to commence building the hotel within three years and meet 12 further planning conditions. A hotel operator has yet to be confirmed.

Still don't understand why we need another hotel yet at least it is more subtle than the monstrosity that is proposed over the 'nightclubs'

I can see why we would want a hotel - there is naff all apart from those on London road, and I am more of a travel lodge type of guy.

The thing that really really confuses me is the lack of parking? The planners must have forgot that visitors come in cars - not on the no47 bus!

One of the conditions of the planning consent should be that the hotel is called "The Red Lion" replacing the much loved hotel all but demolished in the late sixties.

Wonderful.

We should never say we have too much of anything.

The more there is, the more facilities we will get.

More please.

20 Jobs?? is that all,

Is this project a neccessity? can think of hundreds of things that the money would be better spent.

Up goes the council tax again.

Will this be up and running for the 2012 Olympics. Wycombe would be an ideal bas for people to travel from. Other than that i cannot see any reason for a hotel of this size. we already have the Alexandra Hotel and lets face it Wycombe isn't the most exciting place to visit.

Its not a bad idea to have a hotel near the heart of Wycombe, however I hope they clean up that area first - has anyone seen the state of the pavements - it is bird droppings that have accumulated over months and the stains of alcoholic beverages and fast food stained on the pavements - why cant WDC employ proper street cleaners - with High pressure washers to clean the street on a daily basis - the now defunct water feature should be replaced wit the one like in Eden opposite the library. Once Frogmore is spruced up - the area will complement a hotel feature

Plus the area needs to bring back some big names

It's a good job that the centre of Wycombe isn't congested! All the cars and taxis of the hotel residents will be easily accommodated by installing and extra set of traffic lights at the entrance/exit of the hotel car park, or am I about to wake up to the real world

What a lovely location for dining outside. Dodging the pigeon s**t, choking on the traffic fumes, avoiding eye contact with the drunks and their cans of Tennants Super etc, the 'cattle-market' style pubs (Litten Tree, Butlers) very nearby. Can't wait!

The implication appears to be that this will be 'tidied up' once the hotel is built. You point out it's a nasty area to be in yet complain when plans are put forward to change it!

When did councils start running hotels?!
This is a private enterprise with private money.
