A NEW combined post office and tourist information centre could be created in Institute Road, the Marlow mayor has revealed.
Cllr Neil Marshall told the Free Press this week he was confident a new home would be found soon for the postal service, which he said was “vital” for the town.
Promising discussions have been held between Marlow Town Council and Post Office officials, he said.
The High Street branch closed in 2007 and a temporary post office was set up in Dean Street car park in February 2008.
The amenity was labelled as a “third world shack” by Canadian visitors earlier this year with some customers complaining about its size.
Royal Mail submitted a retrospective application in the summer to keep it in the car park until July 2012.
Now it appears a permanent home could be found before this date.
“I think what is coming will be promising, the tealeaves as we read them are looking good,” cllr Marshall said.
“None of the commercial shops could justify the floor space which is being provisioned for by the post office.
“We are looking at Institute Road and we believe things are becoming favourable to having this.”
Cllr Marshall added: “We have got to have a main post office and it has got to be somewhere close to the town. Businesses rely upon it.”
The Post Office has said it remains "determined to provide post office services in Marlow."
If the plan went ahead it would mean relocating the current Marlow information centre from the High Street.
