Eggs and bottles thrown at police after High Wycombe Christmas Lights event

Police confirm 'incidents' after Christmas lights switch on Police confirm 'incidents' after Christmas lights switch on

This story was updated at 2pm.

EGGS and bottles were thrown at police officers and a police van was damaged in violent scenes after the Christmas lights switch on in High Wycombe last night.

Three juveniles from the High Wycombe area were arrested for alleged public disorder offences following the incident, which witnesses say started in Church Street at around 9pm.

A window of the McDonalds restaurant in the High Street was also smashed, in an incident Superintendent Paul Emmings called “disappointing” following the successful star-studded lights switch on in Frogmoor.

He said: “The event itself passed without incident and it was only afterwards that a small number of young people decided to fight.

“It’s very disappointing they set out to ruin a family event but it’s also a real credit to my officers that they managed to keep control of large crowds, the majority who were not involved in fighting, and dispel the incident very quickly.

“We are continuing to investigate and we will be reviewing CCTV from the event. Anyone identified as being involved in public disorder will be arrested.”

Wycombe Wanderers stewards are believed to have helped police restrain the crowds.

The three arrested youths have been released on bail until Thursday. Contact police on 08458 505 505 with any information.

More shoddy reporting... I am sure there were hardly any incidents.. I am equally sure there will be a barrage of abuse and complaints from the armchair critics.

What a shame people can't behave themselves at something as innocent as switching on Christmas lights. I walked through the same event on Marylebone High St the other night which was lovely, ditto the Beaconsfield Festivel of Lights. I hope anychildren in attendance weren't hurt.

There were sporadic incidents involving teenagers of all races fighting with each other. Quite predictably what overwhelmed the Police officers was the "Playground effect" mass of nosey nothing better to do than watch and stir up a fight group of kids who flocked in numbers up to 30 - 40 whenever Police tried to arrest an individual. As expected these idiots grew their minerals when in the company of their 30 "mates" and had pops at the Officers. Mounted Police on horseback had to come in and split the crowd up who were making the situation worse. These incidents will never be avoided, as the majority of Wycombe cannot be trusted to walk on by and allow Officers room to work. They are the reason people need Policing in the first place, idiots who spoil family nights out in what should be a pleasant market town in Bucks.

If this is even partially true , it sounds like a poor situation badly managed and involving several groups of 'people' (yobs ? , cretins ? gangs ? ) who appeared to have gone there to cause trouble.
.
For sake of the rest of us - STAY AWAY - we don't need or want you at any child-oriented event or other celebration in Wycombe Town.

What a terrible , terrible shame at what is a family event for mostly young children. NOT for yobs of whatever background and wherever there are come from.
.
And here , on this site , after this apparent sad incident we get the usual gloating snidey remarks from the usual suspects.
.
May a horrible persistent painful life-long horrendous curse descend on the despicable heads and twisted minds of all those involved , including the moronic gloaters.
.
And Long Live the Good People of this area. Nil desperundum !
.
And BFP - I beg you to really fully check your facts this time on this incident- your off-the-cuff reporting in recent times is becoming questionable to say the least - that's only My humble opinion , of course.

If only these 3 juveniles could be given proper 'adult' prison, it may deter future idiots from ruining the fun of a great majority of decent, law abiding people. Unfortunately, they'll probably be given an ASBO or similar slap on the wrist.

I personally think it is hilarious when people call Wycombe the pits. They are normally the people who haven't been further than Milton Keynes in their lives.

May I suggest a trip to a few deprived areas of the UK.

To call an affluent town like High Wycombe 'the pits' suggests one may have ones blinkers on.

Nothing wrong with dodos ; the poor innocent tame creatures were killed off and made extinct on their island paradise by thoughtless selfish migrant members of our 'human' race.
.
Now similar selfish stupid self-indulgent 'people' attending the Wycombe Switch-on are now trying to kill off what should be a community-wide celebratory and wonderful occasion.
.
If you want (wild) life , check out what's crawling about in the underwear / vests of the lay-abouts and drinkers in the Church Yard or on the 'holy' untouchable-by-polic
e area next to the railway station.
.
Nobody in Wycombe should need, want or even wish to see any nasty behaviour of this nature.

BUT then I happened to come across the sorry news about the Castlefield allotments being vandalized by morons this week.

Attached was a comment from a 'dennis healey , high wycombe' who appeared to show little sympathy for those allotment holders. In fact none at all ! In fact he appears to be asking the Council to throw them all off the site.

These hard-working people are also trying to carry out their harmless business of growing veg and flowers and other without any interference whatsoever anybody. And it's a really environmentally friendly and a very harmless sociable activity - the diametric opposite of what goes on in Yobland .

michael healey , high wycombe : if you are being ironic , I missed the irony in your comment about the allotments and I apologize .

Otherwise if you meant it , you can't have things both ways and wish ill of other victims of this society. The same rules and behaviour should apply to everyone.

I think people should do as they would be done by , IMHO. What do you think Morag et al ?

Hello, old friend!! I have now read the article about the allotments and it is a story very close to my heart. Not long after my Mum died, my elderly father was left living alone in a small village next to the pub. His large vegetable garden was his pride and joy and he tended the lovely flower beds my Mum had created. One evening I got the most terrible phone call from him – some yobs had set fire to his garden shed containing a lifetime of tools and equipment.
~
The fire brigade had been called, causing great local excitement and I arrived to find all the yobs (yes, I think that term is justified) had turned out of the pub for the entertainment, to watch the fire, trampling the lovely garden and leaving it littered with glasses and bottles. I could go on…… but you get the picture and it still upsets me to this day. (But Dad lives very near to me now and has a thriving garden again)
~
SO. .. I have read and re-read Michael Healy’s comments and I don’t think I need to tell you my opinion of him IF those comments are serious. Are they Mr. Healy, or was that an attempt at irony?
~
If Mr. Healey did mean those comments I have lost all sympathy for him. He cannot expect support if he is trying to turn other peoples’ misery to his own advantage with no regard to their suffering. It may seem a trivial matter to some people but I know just how distressing it can be.

Thanks for that , Michael H the Kebab man. Now I understand the point you were making. I got hold of the wrong end of the stick (on the kebab perhaps).
.
You have restore my faith in people. And I do feel really sorry and sympathize with those poor vandalized allotment holders

Also I get the feeling that WDC has various hidden agendas which normal folk have not access to. Some council politicians have an unproportionately undue influence on certain council decisions .
You may be a victim of this. The old saying "it's not what you know but who" may apply.
.
This council appears to hell-bent on selling all the municipal silver off at the moment besides continually taking the side of big business (especially weathy ones)
.
So your little enterprise has not the influence or weight that these types are interested in. It would have been interesting to know who it is who objects to your business and what their individual motives are.
.
All I can say is you should persist with your efforts and don't forget (which I am sure you haven't) any publicity of whatever kind is good publicity. Keep at it and good luck.
.
