Angry Marlow driver: don't pay your council tax over gritting

AN ENRAGED fitness instructor has called for residents to withhold their council tax for a month to express their outrage about “treacherous” roads.

Melanie Carvell, 34, of Butler's Court, Marlow said she was “incensed” after an officer hung up on her today when she demanded answers on why key roads and paths were still iced up.

Melanie, who works at the Marlow Club in Fieldhouse Lane, said: “It was treacherous on Friday after the snow, cars were sliding up the High Street.

“Everyone knew it was coming so why didn't they get the grit out beforehand? It was the volume of roads that hadn't been touched that annoyed me. Station Road was like an ice rink and pedestrians were looking at the cars in terror.”

The mother-of-two got through to Buckinghamshire County Council, which is responsible for gritting roads, on Monday, having called a number of times since Friday.

She wanted to ask why some of the most heavily used roads – including Institute Road and Station Road - had not been gritted but was refused answers by an officer who then put down the phone, she said.

“It was the sheer arrogance of the person that I wasn't entitled to know why these things weren't done. I came off the phone incensed,” Melanie said.

“I think a petition should be started to say we are not paying tax for a month. I have watched three senior citizens fall over, I think it's disgusting.”

Institute Road and Station Road were not on the priority salting lists, Buckinghamshire County Council said, although High Street, West Street and Spittal Street had all been gritted.

High Street was gritted at 7pm and 11pm on Thursday, the night the snow began to fall, at 7pm the following two days, and twice on Sunday.

However, due to temperatures plummeting to minus 10 degrees Celsius, gritting had become less effectual, Buckinghamshire County Council's transport localities team leader Si Khan said.

“The problems that we have currently is it's not normal weather conditions that we are dealing with at the moment for December – it's an extreme case. It was minus ten last night.

“It's not as effective as it would be if it was above minus eight, it becomes less effective, we are working against nature here. We are doing the best we can.”

She added: “It's not that Marlow is forgotten but on the primary routes we concentrate on the A and B roads – the main arteries in and out of the town.

Mrs Khan said she was not aware of the phone call but was “sorry to hear” about it and would investigate, as all calls are recorded.

The priority list for roads in Marlow is: Burroughs Grove Hill, Little Marlow Road, Chalkpit Lane, Queens Road, Seymour Court Drive, Dean Street, Spittal Street, Frieth Road, West Street, Henley Road, Parkway, Oxford Road, Pound Lane, Wiltshire Road and Wycombe Lane.

I wholeheartedly agree with Melanie Carvell when she says "I think a petition should be started to say we are not paying tax for a month." I have already cancelled my direct debit.
There is no other way to voice our opinion. It is NOT 'cost effective' to reduce our transportation system to a standstill - never mind the safety aspect.
Come on everyone - get off your bums and SAY SOMETHING!!!!!

I agree but it's not just Marlow! Why do I pay my tax only to drive on dangerous roads? On Monday it took me 5 hours to get from West Wycombe to my home in Wycombe town center and as I travelled along the West Wycombe Road past many abandoned cars I could see plenty of other cars in trouble down all the side roads. How I did get home safely I honestly do not know and it needs the council to pull their finger out! If they are not gritting the roads I want the money back that I paid them to do it!

i think everybody is at fault tbh, the motorist as well as the council, christmas week snow comes down everybody paniks trys to get out of there workplaces / shopping centres hence the gridlock, nothing more could have been done despite gritters not coming out till maybe late, it would have been pointless laying down salt when i will have no effect when everything is thawing due to everyone driving on it

Ha ha ha ha ha this woman is laughable! Yeah, go ahead and not pay your council tax, then GO TO PRISON!
What a foolish thing to say!
And I am not surprised that someone put the phone down on her, she was probably screaming rudely down the phone at them obviously thinking that becasue she pays council tax she has the right to speak to people who work at the council like dirt.

So, if we stop paying council tax, who will fund road repairs and, maintenance, emergency services, public transport, library services, adult and child social care and many other services?

i think that the people that are saying not to pay council tax are well within their right, yes people were put out but this would not have happened if the council would done wat we all pay for and GRIT THE ROADS!!!
think of all the people out there who need ambulances but what are they to do when they cant even get thru!? there are only two 4 x 4 ambulances and even they are struggling to get around.
people who have been at work and cant get home? if u are going to do a job do it properly! dont just half heartedly grit the roads. what salt has been put out is pathetic! hardly worth even bothering!
ok, i see that people are saying the snow will all be forgotten about tomorrow but what about now? what about the people who are dying because the emergency services cant get thru? what about the elderly or those with small children who cant get out to get the essentials?
bucks county council have really let the people of wycombe down this time! people are suffering because they cant be bothered to do their jobs properly! they knew about the snow coming weeks ago so why not organise it all when we first knew about it? the council couldnt organise a fight in a wet paper bag even if they tried!!! its a joke!!!!

why do we expect the council to clear the roads, they never do anything properly except excel at incompetance. The only thing that suprises me is that they don't book the abandoned cars for parking just to grab a bit more from us. They make scrooge look positively festive

It's a great idea, if enough people take part the council will have to listen, they haven't got the resources to take even 10% of the council tax payers to court. Come on BFP have some balls and get behind this idea, show us that you're not just some local boring rag.

Yes OF COURSE, MUST be a council insider if someone doesn't agree with your opinion!
Or it could be that the point is stupid and will get the woman absolutely nowhere!
Does she really think that by witholding her council tax the council will suddenly go, "oh yes of course you are right, we will come straight out and grit your road, in fact whilst we are here do you want us to do your driveway as well".
And what about all the other services that your council tax pays for like fire, police and ambulance? And social services? Shall we just forget about them??
Ridiculous.

Additionally, I have worked in customer facing services before, and the way that people think they are entitled to speak to you just because they a p*ssed off with something and you happen to be at the end of the phone is disgusting, so I really have no sympathy for anyone who phones up hysterical ranting and raving and then has the phone put down on them.

If money is spent on provision for a once in a decade provision, then I will withold my property tax. Get real, God decided that we should all get a reality check. Nobody can forsee such rare events and provide to ensure they do not effect us.

It is surprising that no lessons have been learned since February, on such a snow and temperatures gritting is not enough!!! A plough is needed in here and a big one! Does anyone here have some imagination to notice the need and make sure there are ploughs ready for such events. Let's not kid ourselves, global warming doesn't mean tropics here but more reckless weather! It's about the time for councils to forsee such triks of nature and get prepared for the money they receive from us! It's a joke people can't get to work because of weather conditions and failed bus services. what a shame on authorities!!!

Hang on - surely KEEPING LIVES SAFE on the roads SHOULD be part of our Council Tax? Is this not obvious? If there's a dirty great hole developed in the main road - would the council not fix it?

On Monday night thousands of peoples lives were at risk. People trying to drive and people abandoning vehicles and having to walk past people trying to drive.

Too many people are blaming the drivers for GOING TO WORK! Try telling all those businesses that "due to snow, we will not be showing up for work today" ... get real. Are we being thick by assuming that when we go to work, knowing that there will be snow on its way, we are to ASSUME that the council DO THEIR JOB? Seriously??

One police officer told one lady that the gritters weren't allowed on Marlow Hill because of "Health & Safety" ..... Arrrgh! It beggars belief. I am incensed that WDC have the audacity to say that Henley Road in Marlow is one of the priority roads to be gritted. Why then was this not done til gone 11pm at night, after a ton of cars had to be left on it, after hundreds of people had to walk down dark country lanes with no lighting and no pathways in order to try and get home.

Why do the council insist that gritting doesn't help in temperatures below a certain degree - when clearly, the minute the gritters had been the cars were able to finally get up the hill on Henley Road.

And, lastly, why are there some idiots trying to insist that the council did all they could and that the drivers are to blame for trying to go about their normal daily business.

The world has gone mad.
