Mums' woe at snowballing childcare costs in Buckinghamshire

WORKING mums are counting the cost of the cold snap in Bucks as childminding fees build up along with the snow.

Some are forking out hundreds of pounds to have their children looked after while they are at work.

Dozens of schools in the county have shut due to the big freeze, and they could remain closed on Monday as well with more snow expected over the weekend (see link, bottom of story).

One mother who contacted the Bucks Free Press said: “As soon as we had this snow all the schools were closing. I have to put my kids in with childminders and it's costing me nearly £100 a day to come to work.

“We still have to make it in to work.”

Some childminders have said they are less busy due to the snow however.

One from Flackwell Heath, who asked not to be named, said: “I'm less busy because people can't get to me.

“When the snow came down just before Christmas I was meant to look after a little girl from Wooburn Moor but her father was worried about what it would be like at 5.30. You don't know what the weather's going to do later on.

“My children are at home as their schools are shut. It's just like Christmas.”

Linda Walshaw of Busy Living in Amersham said: “It's been relatively quiet. A lot of parents have been at home or working from home.

“After-school clubs aren't running. The whole thing is pretty chaotic really.”

Have you been affected by the snow? Have your say below.

no mention of what the fathers are doing, slightly sexist and by the way schools arent childcare places you have babies you have to take responsibility for your babies

in fairness, mum or dad, its irrelevant, the point of the matter is that as parents by law you have to send your child to school, which is absoloutley correct, no, its not a childcare place but it is something that you HAVE to do, and that is best for the kids. - what i don't understand is that in every other industry life goes on, people walk to work, people manage. my colleagues have been walking miles to work all week to ensure the business continues, however in order for many of us to do this we have to then shell out nearly a days wages to do it. I just don't understand why teachers can actually decide in many cases this week, the night before, that they won't make it into work???!!!

erum excuse me!

they have to go to school by law..so why isnt the school there to take them!

this is how the economy works.
parents have kids who go to school whilst parents work

all other organisations have continued to function..as you state with people walking to work

since when did the school become responsible for the safety of my child on the way TO school? (the access paths / roads are dangerous etc comments?)
i'll deliver them to the door. you keep them safe until I pick them up- keep them in all day if you have to....just like you do when it rains the other 180 days of the year!!

come on councils and school
SORT IT OUT!!#
one day closed when it all came down- fine.. Businesses have continuity/disaster plans - I know cos i tender for council contracts and we have to prove this as part of our tender as to how we continue to provide our service in the event of fire, flood ect. why dont schools have disaster/contingency plans?????????

readerabc i have to say thank you for being in my world!!! clearly the other two that have commented are not living in the real world where, like you say, we have to send kids to school by law, so yes, keep the schools open. it was an utterly pathetic situation to have to close them for so long, and even more annoyingly, in business many people who didn't make it in had to take annual leave for it, every teacher i know got paid!! fab job to have, perhaps i should have gone into that industry....
