Sand used on roads as grit stocks dwindle

SHARP sand is now being used to back up dwindling stocks of salt on some roads.

Buckinghamshire’s transport boss Cllr Val Letheren said the material has been collected from Holtspur gravel pits for use on secondary routes as grit is prioritised for the major roads.

Only restricted deliveries of grit have come into Amersham this week because the Government is now advising the prime supplier, Salt Union, where it can be sent at the moment.

More snow is forecast for tonight (see link, bottom of story).

Cllr Letheren, Buckinghamshire County Council’s cabinet member for transport, said it had received “hardly anything compared what we wanted to get” and said it was a “difficult situation”.

BCC had orders of grit due to arrive this week until the Government stepped in.

The council were down to about 6,600 tons - about a quarter of capacity - at the beginning of last week but would Cllr Letheren would not say how much is left now.

However, she said by rationing the gritting it should be possible to last out the big freeze.

“Doing these as a very diminished route we should be able to last out the cold snap, we’re trying to,” she said.

“We’ve still got some left but what we are concerned about is because we’ve been careful and we did have a lot and we ordered as much as we could in the summer at the best price.

“We don’t want to be penalised where other councils or authorities have just been getting through theirs and run out so they get replenished.

“There’s a bit of an issue going on and we need more clarity from the government about how the salt cell is going to work.”

The Salt Cell – which is comprised of the Cabinet Office Civil Contingencies Secretariat, DfT, Department for Communities and Local Government, Highways Agency and the Local Government Association - is assessing which areas of the country need salt the most and then making recommendations to suppliers.

Cllr Letheren said: “We are waiting to see how the government is going to let us have salt now they have put a hold on all the salt distributions.”

Some authorities have asked BCC to take some of their grit but it has only helped Milton Keynes, Cllr Letheren said.

She said Bucks was coping and had been better prepared than many other local authorities across the country.

Meanwhile, two gangs have cleared footways in the centre of High Wycombe while villages such as Amersham, Chesham, Little Chalfont, Iver, Chalfont St Peter, Burnham have helped BCC put grit on pavements, she said.

I bet London (where little snow has fallen) has plenty of salt!
Which idiot put the government in charge of salt distribution?

Saw a car crash into the wall of the flyover this morning, there seemed to be little if any salt on the roads after the snow shower we had overnight.

They took charge themselves and have reputedly cancelled long standing orders for the salt. no doubt they will send the majority of the salt to areas they want votes in, in the next few months?

Crazy I live in Hennerton Way off St Hughs Avenue none of the roads have even been gritted once let alone a few times, no one can park or even get out.
This is what we pay our council tax for is it, if roads had been gritted schools would not have to close and people would be able to get on with their lives.
I have had enough I have cleared my drive and patio with a spade and table salt, which is totally clear now of ice and snow.
Wycombe council get a grit (Grip)

from snowbound and icy Downley

So as taxpayers, as money is difficult to get hold of sometimes, can we expect a reduction in council tax for the next period, as to be honest, these last few weeks has been a complete and utter balls up by the people we pay money to, to get services in return, if we came up with excuse after excuse, would that be ok, "I DON'T THINK SO", to be honest i think this LETHEREN creature should go, and take that MEEK thing with her.

Here is an announcement from stupid person of the year...
I went to HW today from Wendover. I started well, went down the A413 to Gt Missenden and turned off to get to Prestwood. ( I was going to the North side of HW).
Everything was fine - that Prestwood-Great Kingshill road was good and I was slow but sure.
I turned left into Four Ashe Road - first mistake. Small automatic corsas should not try country roads.
Second mistake - I turned into the little cemetery to try and turn round as I did not think my car would make it. Guess what - I got stuck!
A lovely couple in a 4x4 ( and humble apologies to all 4x4 drivers for comments I have made about their vehicles) came and got me out.My car is automatic ( as I said) so there was no help with the gears.
They pushed me out so I could turn and go back to the main road.
A HUGE THANK YOU to these lovely people!

I went down Cryers Hill. turn left into town and drove to Hamilton Hill.
You've guessed it - drove a little way and my car went "NO". This time another lovely couple who were loading things into a van stopped the traffic while dozy dora here turned round.
So a Big THANK YOU to them as well!

I am a fool but a safe fool back in Wendover now and my car is sulking!

I walked the two a half miles into town, leaving my car under the 17 inches of snow on its roof ( sorry Imran, no photo... ) and after a short wait got a bus back.

No car, no stress, no dents....

All brave talk in last couple of weeks Val but let's face it the whole thing has been a shambles. Do the honourable thing and fall on your sword and let a real manager take the helms. Next year you must keep a good buffer of stocks and then this will never happen.

can I ask all you very well educated people out there......our school has asked for volunteers to go and help clear the school entrance of snow to try and help the kids return to school on Monday. As i believe it, if we go and help (which we are willing to do), if someone slips on the part that we have cleared, we are liable to be sued.....is that correct???? and also, is it worth clearing the path to the school when the road has not seen a gritter at all, and to be honest it probably couldnt get down there due to abandoned cars anyway !

WITH all the media hype and Government propaganda over the past six months over global warming, it is somewhat surprising to many people that Britain should be experiencing the worst winter freeze for 30 years
The BBC long range weather forecast a barbecue summer and a mild winter .The so called experts got it completely wrong this time so what makes them think we will believe they can predict the temperature in 50 years time .
The Government might have believed its own propaganda about man-made global warming raising temperatures and taken a gamble that this winter wouldn’t be so cold. Did they advised councils not to stockpile the normal amount of grit and salt .
Is this global warming/climate change government propaganda the main subsequential reason for this lack of grit and salt , and the dangerous state of our roads and paths.

Any news on the refuse collection vehicle/ formally known as a dustcart, which yesterday, reportedly slid gracefully out of a side road, on to West Wycombe Road and into the side of a bus? Alledgedly this caused injuries to passengers/ operatives and considerable damage to the vehicles. Hopefully nobody was badly hurt. Perhaps a little reminder that some folk are trying to get the job done, against the odds, but safety is important!

They had an expert on BBC breakfast this week who said that you can't be sued for clearing the snow unless you were deliberately negligent. You could however potentially be sued if you don't clear an area and someone slips on it. So it's a bit of a Catch 22 situation but I always clear my paths of snow and ice, if you do it properly there is little danger of anyone slipping.
.
I don't know Stokenchurch that well so have no idea what the roads are like, only you and the local populace can decide if it's worth doing. It might also be worth checking the weather forecast because as I understand it there's more snow forecast over the next 36 hours or so....

Why doesn't Bucks County Council pop down to Asda in High Wycombe and see how effectively the contractors have dealt with the snow covered car park - was a pleasure to see how well it had been dealt with.

Cllr Val Letheren . how the hell can you sleep at night,
sending the council workers out. and doin half a job,
theses poor people you have sent out to clear some of our roads, have worked bloody hard over theses past few weeks. they have had abuse shouted at them, snow balled,
they all wants to do there jobs, and clear our roads and paths,
but due to you not doing your job which we the tax payer pay you for,
they cant

just a few things you have been the cause of

loss of wages to the tax payer
shop takings down
injurys to people trying to get about
cancellation at hospitals/doctors

plus many many more. just all because you never done your job.

you just sit back collect your large pay packet. and rub your hands together,

but the folk of wycombe will remember this. and it wont go away

Well from the rate that icicles are falling off my roof it seems the thaw is setting in.

On my own I have managed to clear a 20 yard stretch of road in about 15 minutes so I can get my car along it. All those of you who are moaning your roads aren't clear i suggest you stop blaming BCC, Val Letheren or Gordon Brown and get out there with a shovel.

What kept the country going in the "good old days" was people not being scared of a bit of hard work, nothing to do with what the council did or didn't do.

Absolutely right.

It doesn't help that there are many more cars on the road these days, and people tend to live further from their place of work than they did years ago.

Another thing that struck me is the lack of snow chains being used. I seem to recall they used to be fairly common when we had lots of snow and ice. Many people who can't miss work had a set so they could get around. Seems these days they just prefer to moan at the council instead.

I do think BCC could perhaps have done better, but gritting is far from an exact science, and people could do a whole lot more to help themselves if it is vital they can still travel.

Why should people stop blaming Val letheren? after all we are robbed of more and more cash every year by this shambles of a council "to maintain services" yet they cannot even keep the transport network open let alone in a reasonable condition. And whats the bets that they will not repair the roads that are now crumbling? only throw a shovel full of tarmac at the problem like they did after Februaries snowfall.
