Speed limit cuts for Chesham and Chalfonts (From Bucks Free Press)

That's fantastic news for all residents on the outskirts of Latimer Road, heading towards Chenies. The accident rate is appalling along this stretch. I can't tell you how many times we've had to help some numpty who has been driving way too fast, in poor road conditions and then they either blame the car or the council for failing to grit the road. My answer is always 'just because a road is signposted at 60mph doesn't mean you need to drive at that speed, especially when it's wet, dark, foggy and freezing'.

I can't say I'm surprised at this, but I don't share your joy, Melanie. I don't live on any of these roads, but I use some of them most days, so my perspective is that of a driver rather than a resident. Most drivers know when it is safe to do 60 and when they need to drive slower. Unfortunately, we are being inconvenienced by those who see a limit as a target and don't bother to think about their driving conditions. Now we all have to drive slowly all the time because of some idiots who won't drive slowly some of the time.

Don't think I am blaming the council or residents who pushed for these changes. I don't think they have much choice: if they can't trust people to use judgment they're bound to restrict the need for judgment

NTB you are quite right I am a resident but I'm also a driver, I also don't actually live as close to the road as my neighbours, so road noise isn't an issue for me.

However, you must admit that driving along Latimer Road can be a dangerous prospect on many days, what with the amount of HGV's that don't take any notice of the signs at Chenies and take up 75% of the road, the eejuts who drive with their high beam on and don't dip it when they see your vehicle and the boy racers who think that 60mph is too slow, the mud on the road from the tractors leaving the fields and the odd cow that escapes and wanders down the road all make for an unpleasant drive at times.

Having said all that I have driven it at 60mph on a few occasions but think that 40 is a much more realistic proposal and it should cut down on the many horrendous accidents that I've seen ie. the overturned cars at the junction with Blackwell Hall Lane, the lorry crashing into the bathroom of the barn at the same junction and who can forget the yellow sports car that went off the road at the junction with Latimer and ended up around 100 feet from the road, in a ditch, on it's side, having rolled numerous times.

More money for the speed cameras!! They canspend it on the roads...............

Why is there this fixation that cutting the speed limits will solve all the problems? Driver education is more important, it is perfectly OK to drive down a 60MPH road at 60MPH if and when conditions allow.

Speed is not the killer, it is proven that speed has not been thecause of most accidents, driver error has been the major factor. a driver will still crash at 20, 30 40 or 50 if they are not paying attention to what they should be doing and reading the road.
