Helicopter rescue from Eden, High Wycombe car park

Picture by Graham Anderson Picture by Graham Anderson

A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital from the roof of the Eden shopping centre car park in High Wycombe today after suffering a fall.

The rescue happened at the top floor of the car park at about 11.30am.

The 55-year-old suffered a suspected broken hip, said Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.

She was taken to Wexham Park Hospital, Slough.

Air ambulance spokesman Rachael Hunter said: "Land Ambulance crews were unable to reach the patient and staff and security at the centre were utilised to close and clear the top car park of cars enabling the Thames Valley Air Ambulance to land safely.

"Shoppers were able to watch In amazement as the pilot landed the helicopter safely on the roof, between the white lines."

Daniel Tomkinson, Eden director, said: "The emergency service were called to assist a lady who had injured herself whilst getting out of her car.

"The air ambulance were able to use the roof of the car park to land on in order to bring the lady to hospital."

The car park must have been empty for a helicopter to be able to land there!
~
No doubt the pilot had be be careful of the updraughts caused by the wind blowing through the shopping malls....

wexham park hospital is in worse state financially than wycombe - but on the plus side they have an A&E Department which is brilliant.......alth
ough maybe being taken to Stoke Mandeville as they have a spinal unit there would have been a better option....probably no where to land the helicopter though.

get well soon whoever you are x

Poor lady. What about taking her to High Wycombe hospital, its only over the road. Oh I forgot the Managers are shutting everything down in High Wycombe hospital. I think it's quite pathetic and outrageous she had to go to Wexham Park.

ffs, what an expense, if Wycombe still had an A&E department, an ambulance could have got her there in minutes.

Just think how much that helicopter cost to take this lady to Wexham, if she had gone to Wycombe, well, words fail me.

I do hope this lady is ok.

It says in the report that the land ambulance couldn't reach her. I assume this is because she fell on the top floor of the car park and ambulances can't get up the ramps.
Also, the Chiltern Air Ambulance is a charity funded by donations and fundraising. They don't get any money from the NHS or Lottery Commission or anything. Perhaps the car-park designers might like to make a donation to them, as surely car-parks should be accessible by ambulance?

Any excuse to have a go at poor old Ivor. That poor bloke can't say a thing that people will agree with, even the smallest insignificant thing is picked up by certain people and twisted and made a big thing of. Or maybe this is all a wind-up opperation. Some of the stupid insane things that are said are only said to try to wind others up.

at the end of the day, a very professional pilot landed on the roof of the car park, recovered the lady and got her safely to an a & e department, where she's apparently making good progress. Think thats about all that matters really!!

It's still a good point that the car park isn't accessible by an ordinary ambulance.
What about a fire engine???
Heaven forbid that a car might catch fire and massive loss of property and possible life because the designers wanted to squeeze a few more spaces in???

"Land Ambulance crews were unable to reach the patient"... probably because the NHS are unable to afford the parking fees.

AYLESBURY VALE DISTRICT COUNCIL car parking charges are alot cheaper, its a pity this woman wasn't in aylesbury.

AYLESBURY VALE DISTRICT COUNCIL free car parking for 2 hours in the retail park. Just produce free ticket from machine and display.

If you read the article properly it says she injured herself whilst getting out of her car...so nothing to do with pavements around Wycombe.

Also from reading the comments above, someone mention about the land ambulance not being able to get to her...never mind free parking in Aylesbury...use a little common sense...It's just wasting time taking a ticket and paying to get the ambulance out of the carpark again...honestly...t
hat just doesn't make sense...much better option taken in flying the air ambulance in. Be realistic people. Dont start making bigger issues of it.

OMG - you grew some and answered.
So to you it is perfectly fine that he uses another's misfortune to make an unrelated dig at Eden.
If you love Ivor's blog so much then frolic over and defend him against the baddies.
Only you can't because you do not have the wit or the intelligence to counter the many valid arguments against some of the things he says.
Instead you sneak on , say a few rude things about us and then sneak off again.
As I said up there, grow some and come and show your support for Ivor. It's a fantastic one this week - all about how Wycombe should stage the Olympics and there should be an Olympics for the abuse. I am sure we would all love to hear your views.

Whoops freudian slip - I meant to say olympics for the obese not abuse.
Although arguably abuse could fit the bill too.:)

I am one of the sisters of the lady who was airlifted to Wexham Park hospital on Saturday and was with her when the accident happened. For those of you who have been kind enough to express your concern, she has suffered a serious fracture at the top of the femur and has had a hip replacement operation today.
We are, of course, very sorry that her rescue turned out to be so complicated and so expensive. The question that really needs asking is why is it not possible to get a standard ambulance into the car park? As a result of this design failure, my sister had to lie in the wet and in pain for over an hour while the paramedic did her utmost to try to organise her safe removal to hospital. We have nothing but admiration for the paramedic, who worked very hard to keep my sister as comfortable as possible - thank you. We are also very grateful to the air ambulance crew who made the spectacular landing on the roof of the car park - we're sure it must have been a highly difficult manoeuvre - thank you to you too (we already donate to this service but we will be sending an extra donation to express our gratitude). We would also like to thank the 2 shoppers who stopped to ring the emergency services for us and the lady who lent us the golf umbrella - we hope that she got it back. We feel somewhat less grateful, however, to the Eden Centre management who took a very long time to stop people accessing the car park and at one point decided that it was only necessary to have one security employee to try to organise traffic and pedestrians (he did as much as he could in the circumstances and we would like to say thank you to him). As for the shoppers who delayed the helicopter landing by insisting that it was more important for them to reach their cars - what can we say? This particularly includes the gentleman who drove carefully around my sister, in the wrong direction, just to get out of his parking space.

Your poor sister. :( And poor you as well.I do hope she makes a full and painless recovery as possible.
A terrible thing to happen. But at least most people rallied round.
