Marlow Forum demands cash for bridge renovation

money must be released by council bosses “immediately” to save ailing Marlow Bridge falling into further disrepair, the town’s major bodies have demanded.

Marlow Community Forum, which represents Marlow Town Council, The Rotary Club of Marlow, Marlow Chamber of Trade, among others, says the Grade One listed structure looks “dreadful” and “scruffy”.

The organisations have thrown their weight “whole heartedly” behind a petition to have cash released.

They believe the town’s most symbolic icon has started to create a bad impression which will damage Marlow’s image and deter tourists.

It follows calls for action from The Marlow Society who said it had become a “disgrace” in Autumn last year.

Petition sheets have been distributed widely in the town and have attracted dozens of signatures so far.

Tony Shannon, chairman of The Riley Park Trust, one of the forum’s members, said: “For such an important bridge, it summarises Marlow in every possible way.

“It looks dreadful and scruffy especially for a tourist town in the summer and the sheer numbers who flock in here.”

Wooden rails are rotting on the Grade One listed bridge and paintwork is flaking away.

The 1832 structure is the work of 19th century engineer William Tierney Clark, whose only other surviving bridge is in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Marlow is twinned with Budavar, a district in Budapest, because of the link and visitors on a recent trip were shocked at the difference in the two crossovers, the forum said.

Marlow Community Forum spokesman Jo Braybrooke said the group “whole heartedly” wanted to take action because it had been “neglected”.

“We're trying to keep the standard of Marlow up to keep it as nice place to come, the bridge is the gateway," she said.

“We can only apply pressure on the council and hope they can find some money for it.”

The forum believe the state of the bridge will only get worse and are even concerned it could potentially become dangerous for walkers who rest on the side of the bridge to look out at the views.

They are concerned the wood is not robust.

Senior bridge inspector for Buckinghamshire Tim Rackham had previously told the Free Press work was not urgent and there were no safety concerns.

He said he would like to carry out refurbishment but was restricted by finances.

In 2007 Buckinghamshire County Council spent about £15,000 on some replacement wood for the parapets – but the wood is still sitting in a warehouse because of a lack of funding to carry out the work.

The budget to repair around 600 bridges and culverts in Buckinghamshire is £255,000 for 2009/10, with a reserve of £55,000. The 2008/9 budget was £300,000.

The "MARLOW Community Forum" seems a large enough organisation to raise a bit of cash at a time when council cash is at a premium.

Ohh do shut up you bunch of boring old F**ts!
Who the hell do these people think they are??
If they are that concerned, A/ fund raise themselves or B/ go to English Heritage and ask them to do something.
So they are going to put pressure on the council are they?

LOL - I bet the council are quaking.

be fair Demoness.....the bridge is just about the only thing that makes Marlow slightly attractive lately...it would be good if its upkeep could be done, and for the record, i do contract work for Tony Shannon, and he aint no "old ****"...he was the one who instigated all the work to maintain Riley Rec, and employed me to carry out all the Park work.......but collectively the Forum can only do so much off their own backs....

Hi Sportsturf -I'm sorry its just the attitude..
"We demand".
This council is talking about cutting essential services due to the pathetic sum Bucks gets from the government. Our most vulnerable people are at risk and this group of well off people ( and lets face it they will be) are insisting that the council does something about the bridge.
As I say, they need to look to themselves a bit more.
I just do not think it can be a priority above other things.

Just tell them you want the money for a football/rugby stadium...You'll get millions and if you are lucky you will get 50k a year with a final salary pension for a project planner.

The bridge is not privately owned, so the repair should not be the responsibility of the private sector. If this is your attitude, then all those from HW complaining about potholes would have gone out and fixed them yourselves, (which they didn't 'cos they demanded that the council do it for them).
If the bridge were to fall in to disrepair and eventually close to traffic, this would put a huge strain on the A4155 Little Marlow roundabout, and the A404. Then, all you HW lot will be complaining about being stuck in traffic on the bypass, and demanding that the council repair the bridge.

I would glady fix the potholes in my road but for the fear of being sued by the council for actually doing a good job. I had to salt and grit my own road which was on a salting route too.
.
If i was that concerned about the bridge i would raise money for it by doing something london to Brighton bike ride (but i am not)

Ah but you see I never ever go near Marlow or the bypass so I will rest on my laurels of righteousness. :)

Hi Demoness...i cant argue with your point about "demanding" monies... it does read like the Forum expects the authorities are obliged to foot the repair bill ....i also agree with your suggestion of approaching English Heritage....i thought this case would be ideal for them to contribute to...as the bridge has such historic beauty and value...
Bogart......that was the whole point of the A404 bypass, to take traffic away from the town and bridge..!!!so how would it pi55 off HW folk..??...it is actually easier to wizz down the bypass rather than struggle thru marlow..
What does bug me....is why the f*** did BCC order the new timbers if they didnt have the funds to comission a contractor to carry out the works...bit flippin daft IMO...maybe WDC ought to put some of that extra £250k from the proposed WWFC stadium towards the bridge repairs...
