PRINCE Harry is backing the Royal British Legion's latest awards initiative to recognise people who have gone out of their way to provide support for the forces.

The Friends of the Forces awards have been launched in Buckinghamshire as part of a national search for people who have contributed to the well-being or appreciation of the forces.

Prince Harry, a Lieutenant with the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals), served in Afghanistan for more than two months.

He said: ““For those serving in the British Armed Forces, the knowledge that others are thinking of them has a hugely positive effect that cannot be underestimated. I remember that very acutely”.

Members of the public are now being asked to nominate people and groups who they think deserve recognition, for example someone who organised a significant fundraising event.

The Royal British Legion’s manager for Buckinghamshire Linda Flecknell said: “We hear of so many amazing acts of kindness and support that we strongly urge people to submit Buckinghamshire nominations for these exciting new awards.”

There are four categories including individual, young individual, community group and commercial organisation contributions.

Winners will be announced in eight regions in the United Kingdom and those short-listed for the national awards will attend a Royal gala ceremony in London in July.
