Balloon released from Bledlow blows across to South Bavaria

A NINE-year-old who let go of a balloon on a starry Friday night in Bledlow was amazed to discover it travelled 670 miles to Germany.

Lewis Bushell and friend William Irons, nine, had high hopes for their balloons as they let them go with their names and telephone numbers on.

Not expecting them to get very far Lewis' mum, Louise, was amazed to receive a phone call from a woman in South Bavaria in Germany two days later who said she had found Lewis' balloon.

Mrs Bushell from Sandpit Lane said: “We let the balloons go on a Friday and on the Sunday we received a call from a lady in Germany.

“At first I just thought it was a joke then they sent me a newspaper article of the story.

“It did fly really high that night. It was very windy and a clear night. We found out afterwards there were 60 mph winds.”

Carolin Hetzel from Schwabthal in South Bavaria called Lewis and then sent the story from their newspaper Obermain Tagblatt and postcards of where she lives.

Mrs Bushell, 42, added: “Lewis was so excited. He couldn't believe it. It really is remarkable.

“She was equally excited as she had made someone happy. Apparently it is only a small village and they are all talking about it.”

Lewis has his sister Amy, 7 to thank as the balloons came from her birthday party at Frankie and Benny's.
