A COUNCIL has today agreed to charge residents who pay using credit card in a bid to save £19,000.
Members of Chiltern District Council's cabinet approved a 1.6 per cent charge for all credit card transactions in an effort to recoup money lost in bank charges.
In the financial year up to April 2008 the council handled 5,000 credit card payments – but the following year this increased to around 20,000.
It meant the council had to fork out £19,000 in bank charges.
Cabinet members said they “did not like” having to introduce the surcharge – but they will review it in 12 months' time.
Credit cards cannot be used to pay for parking fines.
The move comes just a month after Wycombe District Council approved a similar scheme (see link, below).
