American Football team aims to put Marlow on map

WITH its riverside location and record gold medal winning Olympian Steve Redgrave as its most famous son Marlow is best known for its rowing prowess.

But soon the town could be revered across the land for its abilities on a different sporting field – American Football.

Youth community worker Sam Mckee, 26, of Wycombe Marsh, is hoping to put Marlow firmly on the 'Grid Iron' map after an after school project became a runaway success.

Marlow Wolves, a team which has grown out of classes at Great Marlow School in Bobmore Lane, will compete in this season's Engligh South League.

Marlow Wolves drew with the country's second best team – Kent Exiles – in a recent match and Sam hopes they can now take the league by storm.

“It's really put Marlow on the map. I really want Marlow to know that American Football has arrived, people have the chance to play on their door step,” he said.

“It's the fastest growing interest sport in the country.”

Sam said the programme “grew and grew” after starting out as an after school club for children in Lane End.

Great Marlow School pupils first began playing the game in summer 2008 and Sir William Borlase's Grammar School became involved in September.

There are now 30 players in the squad players and eight coaches, including himself.

The Wolves are the only American Football team in Buckinghamshire.

Mr Mckee said: “To make it part of my job has been wonderful, as has getting the kids from the community to be part of something. I never dreamed it would be what it is.”

I think Marlow has a bit more standing than an American Football team so I think the headline should read "Marlow hosts new American Football Team". Give a bit of credit to Marlow having been on the map since 1066.

Good luck aswell to the players.

You need shoulder pads and a helmet most days as soon as you 'touch down' on Marlow High Street, so why not make it official?
