RBL members remain hopeful of saving Risborough hall

CAMPAIGNERS battling for the Princes Risborough's Royal British Legion Memorial Hall future remain optimistic they can save it from the hands of private owners.

The RBL branch action group laid on a six-hour open day on Saturday at the Bell Street hall as part of a month-long drive to raise funds and sign up new members in a bid to thwart the closure of the club.

The Risborough branch is one of nine New Legion Clubs around the country refurbished a year ago, at a cost of £600,000 each, put up for sale by RBL HQ because they were no longer making money.

An un-named buyer – which members believe to be a property developer - bought the hall's lease at the end of last year after the town council put in a bid to buy the property.

The sale will only go through if the un-named plan is given council planning permission.

But Princes Risborough Mayor and chairman of the town council, Cllr Alan Turner said the action group had been in contact with HQ and there remains a “very good chance” the hall can be saved.

Speaking as a concerned Legion member he added: “We've had no confirmation from HQ when the hall would be closing or when a meeting will be held to decide the fate of the hall. After that meeting they should be able to tell us something.

“But I think the way it has been carried out, with staff not knowing whether they will have a job at the end of the month, it is no way to run a business.

“But over the last few weeks, the branch has launched a new drive and business is very much on the up and we have proved that this business is very much viable.

“I think we have a very good chance – there are a number of issues I think and hope the Charity Commission will investigate.

“For a business, that has been running in this town for more than 50 years and was only refurbished 12 months ago to be shut down, to be shut down now doesn't make any sense.”

It is a shame the RBL "branch action group" has not mail shot or door knocked the local residents as I live two streets away and other than the BFP coverage, people in my street have never been invited to the Legion or even knew about the 6 hour open day on saturday!!!!!!!!! Communication with you locals may help you gain members.............

becoming a pub rather than a club was the start of the downfall, you didn't have to be a legion member to use the premises, the only advantage of having membership was that they knocked 50p off the price of a pint, membership was sold over the bar,by barstaff who accepted the membership forms and delivered the benefits immediately, rather than wait the 48 hours required as stated in the legion rules, the legion disbanded any committee and was relegated to one small room in the corner of the bar.
Rather than offer money that they didn't have,(approx #400,000 )I believe it would be better to invest some of the Town Councils time and financial backing in improving the existing community centre we already have, perfectly suitable for the weekly bingo and would, with the previously mentioned support, perfectly suited for various dances, discos, bands and any other things that community halls are used for.
The Bell Street Memorial Hall ceased to be a Legion or have anything other than a tiny link with anything the Legion stood for the day it sold out to 'Legion Clubs'

You are right, they screwed up when they took over and ruined it overnight.
But those of us that are trying to save it are of the old school of thinking, let's give it a chance and have one last push to get it profitable and get it back.
As for Tommo's comments- do you think we all have all the time in the world to go around leafleting everyone? Stop moaning and start doing. This is the last chance saloon.
