THREE new cameras may soon be added to the controversial CCTV network installed in Marlow in 1998.

The announcement came at a Marlow Town Council meeting last Tuesday and the Marlow Society is deeply concerned that the proposed sitings would further tarnish the town's good looks.

The four locations suggested for the cameras, which would cost around £150,000 to install, are Marlow Bridge, overlooking Higginson Park, Liston Court, Station Road and Station Approach.

The Marlow Society is currently taking the District Council to the ombudsman over the siting of the current cameras.

Spokesman John Evans said: 'We are particularly alarmed at the possibility of a camera going up in front of the bridge. We would like to have a good look at the siting of any future cameras.'

During a talk at last week's meeting by PC Steve Jackson of Marlow Police Station and Richard Powell head of engineering services at Wycombe District Council, PC Jackson said: 'There is no camera covering Liston Court, which is one of the main problems.

'Higginson Park's main gate is covered but not further into the park. We find kids gather around the play area and cafe. Possibly a camera on the bridge might give a better view to see that area.

'The only other place that could possibly do with one is further down Station Road towards the Marlow Donkey pub.'

Mr Powell said there was room within the current system to install three extra cameras in the town.

After the installation costs the three cameras would cost a further £45,000 a year to run.

Frank Sweatman, Marlow Town Councillor, said: 'The cost could be met in part by Home office funding, but at the end of the day council tax payers are going to have to bear the cost.'
