A GOLD, late Tudor-early Stewart ring has been dug up by local metal detectorists on National Trust land at West Wycombe.
On Thursday Buckinghamshire Coroner Richard Hulett held an inquest at High Wycombe where he decided the ring was treasure.
A coroner has to hold inquests on any precious metal object or hoards of coins more than 300 years old. If he says it is a treasure then the British Museum, has the right to buy it after it has been valued.
In this case the ring has been so mangled by centuries of ploughing and its stone is missing that the British Museum did not want it.
All finds have to be sent to the county council's finds liaison officer, Ros Tyrrell, who then passes anything likely to be treasure to the British Museum, whose experts prepare a report for Mr Hulett.
