It's all good news at county awards

NEWSREADER Moira Stuart came to Bucks on Wednesday to honour county council employees who had gone above and beyond the call of duty.

The Achieving Top Performance Awards are designed to recognise those whose work benefited both residents and colleagues.

Moira, who has been reading the news for more than two decades and was awarded with an OBE in 2001, gave a motivating speech about the wonderful feeling of achieving and then presented all the winners with their awards.

Afterwards, she said: "I was delighted when I was asked to present these awards as it is so nice to meet people who want to go that extra mile.

"I have met some truly amazing people to whom I really take my hat off. The evening was a wonderful occasion and I hope there are many more to come."

Bill Chapple, deputy leader of the council, said: "The evening really went with a bang and there didn't seem to be anyone without a smile on their face. This is another demonstration of how we continually strive to improve the services we provide to the people of Buckinghamshire."

The awards were split into eight sections and each section had a winner with others specially commended.

The overall winner was Daniel Shirley, director of SoundStudio in Aylesbury, which is funded by the council's youth and community services, among others.

Cllr Chapple added: "Through his hard work and dedication, Daniel has transformed this youth music project into a nationally recognised services for young people "SoundStudio is an innovative project, helping young people of all backgrounds to enjoy music, develop new friendships and celebrate the joy of using music in a creative way."

The project provides music sessions in youth clubs, schools, prisons and bail hostels throughout the county. Mr Shirley recently got a £124,000 grant from Youth Music partners of the Lottery.

This year, judges were so impressed with the commitment of Chesham-based home carer Charmian Hattrell, that they decided to give her a special award partly because she has not had a day off sick since starting work in 1980.

In nominating her for an award, supervisor Debbie Cave said all Charmian's energy and enthusiasm had been channelled into helping vulnerable adults live independent lives in their own homes.

And the winners were... There were eight categories with one winner and two commended.
