GERRARDS Cross railway station is to be closed for the next two Saturdays. The closure is to allow Tesco to move into the next stage of construction of its multi-million pound store in Packhorse Road, Gerrards Cross.

It will also allow Network Rail to carry out engineering work to the line just down the track at Wembley.

The railway line will be closed tomorrow as engineers begin the first phase of building the tunnel over the railway line that the store will eventually sit on.

There will be another closure next Saturday. Building work will also continue during the night.

A spokesman for Chiltern Railways said: "We understand on the back of that there is going to be some work on the Tesco project.

"If one company or one project is closing the line for any particular reason, somebody else who has an interest in that section of line may piggy back on the back of that work."

She added: "A siding at Gerrards Cross is also being extended to allow trains to deliver materials to the Tesco site."

Tunnel segments, brought in by train, will be put into position by a crane assembled on site.

A replacement bus service has been organised for the two Saturdays.

Chiltern Railways and Wasps RFC have laid on special coaches for fans travelling to watch Wasps against Newcastle Falcons in High Wycombe.

The store will open next summer.
