THE award-winning Water Gardens development in Harlow which at the end of last year was honoured in the British Council of Shopping Centre's Gold Standard Town Centre Environment Awards has scooped two more awards.

The regeneration scheme, which involved the relocation of the original water gardens, the building of the new Civic Centre and a host of shopping outlets, has received two highly commended awards, for Enhancing the Retail Offer and Creating Quality Environments in the East of England Town Centre Management Awards.

The development, designed by Benoy Architects, was built in two stages starting in April 2002.

It has since attracted major high street names, has a restaurant overlooking the water gardens from its mezzanine floor and a new car park.

It has been described as a "shining example" of how to "respectfully maintain the best whilst moving forward and embracing change, setting a benchmark for all that is good within our public spaces and attracting future developments".

Harlow Council joint leader Kevin Brooks (Labour) said: "We are delighted that once again the Water Gardens has received external recognition for the difference it is making to Harlow.

"The regeneration of the Water Gardens shows what can be achieved by partnership working."
