Sporting day raises thousands for charity

A CHARITY cricket tournament raised around £10,000 last week for good causes, as teams took to the field for two different charities.

The Colonel Garrett Cup competition took place in Cookham Dean on Sunday as teams competed for the coveted title while children and families gathered for entertainment, including a bou-ncy castle, magician, face painting, and a barbecue.

The competition, at Coo-kham Dean Cricket Ground, was staged on behalf of Arthritis Research and Tha-mes Valley Air Ambulance.

The winners were Malik's Tandoori Restaurant team, based in Cookham High Street.

The competition, which has been staged for the last 15 years, is named after the late landlord of the Chequers Pub in Cookham.

Colonel Garrett, as he was called, was renowned for his handlebar moustache.

Dave Knowles-Leak, chairman for the cricket club, said: "We had an absolute bumper time.

"We raised a lot of money and a lot more than we were expecting. Everyone really enjoyed themselves."

Malik's Tandoori is staging a follow-up gala buffet lunch for Arthritis Research on Sunday, July 31. Tickets cost £25.

Phone Viv Foss on 0118 9736533, or George Allard on 01628 621477 for tickets. The buffet starts at midday
