Hundreds back BFP High Speed 2 campaign

HUNDREDS of Bucks Free Press readers have got in touch to protest against plans for a high speed rail link through the county.

Campaign coupons have been pouring into our office from readers concerned at the impact the proposed route would have on the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Plans released by Lord Adonis, the Secretary of State for Transport, show the Government's preferred route for the High Speed 2 project would go through a tunnel under Old Amersham and the Chalfonts, before passing close to Great Missenden.

It has sparked outrage among residents with protest groups being set up and public meetings being held to express opposition to the plans, which would see trains running at 250mph through south Bucks.

Many of you have also filled out the online form on our website to take part in the campaign.

Kirsten Gates from Great Missenden said the plans were “a ludicrous and expensive scheme” that would “destroy the Chilterns”, with Saunderton resident John Hughes saying the Chilterns “should be conserved and enhanced, not trashed”.

Jessica Simpson of South Heath said: “This is an ill-thought through, expensive, environmentally destructive proposal which will benefit no-one in the communities it will pass through.”

We all benefit from the high wycombe to marleybone train and yet its track cut through beautiful countryside. As does the M40 yet I would not say the countryside was trashed by them.

Yes, but we can use both of them. To use the HS2, we would have to go back into London and that would take longer than the exisitng railway line.

I am all for HS2 - it will put the Great back in Great Britain.

I don't care if I never use it but probably would for the experience.

I probably won't get a ticket for the Olympics either.

The HS2 will leave no greater scar on the environment than does the M40.

Hands up who's not been on the M40!!!

To be perfectly honest, if there was a choice between HS2 and the Olympics, i would go for HS2.

HS2 would have alot of money spent, and be there for good.

Olympics are just a waste of money, and be derelict soon after its finished.

Millenium Dome a prime example.

It's only an early April Fool joke anyway - have you seen Lord "Adonis".

Do you mean the O2 Arena?

Well said!, I fully agree. Award the construction work to UK based companies and the money stays in our economy anyway so what's the big deal about the cost. Think of the employment it would create.

Projects like the Olympics & M25 widening have kept many small and medium sized construction and plant companies in business throughout the recession, especially when the private sector hasn't been spending.

BFP should be supporting innovation and public investment, not campaigning against it!

The point is, we have those already and when they were built we did not have the environmental problems we have now.
Songbirds are dwindling , natural habitats are being lost. The newt and certain toads are protected species. The 14 types of bat in this country are all protected. When was the last time you saw a skylark?
Butterflies, plants, insects are all disappearing at the rate of knots.
And all because of the arrogance of man.
Well guess what - we do not own this planet - we have no more rights to this earth than any of the creatures that we share it with.
To blatantly ignore nature is something we do at our peril.

I honestly cannot see the benefit of spending the proposed £60million (a budget that will inevitably be increased and money that we simply cannot afford) to loose only a slight amount of time on ones journey!
As a London University student having come from the Chilterns I cannot see that this additional rail link is needed in any way, the only benefit, correct me if I am wrong, is slightly shorter travel times and for our government to gloat about the fact we have a high speed railway (who cares)!
We have many good train links to the big cities yet many people still drive instead of taking the train purely because train tickets are far too expensive, not because there isn't an ample supply of trains or because it is easier! Would this additional link really mean cheaper travel - I doubt it as they will be trying to regain the money spent on its construction!
Surely this money and manpower would be better spend on perfecting our current rail and tube lines instead of fuelling this ridiculous plan for something that a country of such a small scale does not need!
At the comment above about putting 'the Great back into Great Britain' - how on earth will a train link do this? Yes the M40, the Chiltern Railways and other numerous transport links disrupt our countryside but there is nothing we can do about that now! Why on earth would we want to add this expensive, and in my opinion; wholly unnecessary, monstrosity to the equation?
