SHOPPERS in Wycombe are shunning the Dovecot car park despite spaces disappearing from other parts of the town.
Yesterday the number of spaces available in Newlands car park, off the Oxford Road roundabout, was cut as work on the town centre redevelopment stepped up a gear.
But council bosses say that drivers can beat the disruption by using the Dovecot, at Bellfield Road, which is often half empty.
Cllr Lesley Clarke, leader of Wycombe District Council, said forward planning was the key for shoppers.
She said: "I know that some people will find parking difficult in town at peak times and we do sympathise. Despite the major works now under way in the town centre, the parking capacity is still there for our current demands, even as the town gets busier in the run up to Christmas.
"Dovecot car park which has 700 places is only a couple of minutes' walk from Newlands and is rarely more than 50 per cent full at the moment."
Work at Newlands will see new ramps built to link the floors of the car park.
Signs have been put up to warn drivers of the changes and stewards will be on hand to help.
People can also use the park and ride from Cressex to get into the town.
Cllr Clarke added: "If travellers choose their options carefully, they should be able to avoid major inconvenience while looking forward to a significant improvement in the town's facilities."
