Fury over 'scurrilous' Labour leaflet by Wycombe candidate Andrew Lomas

LEAFLET: Andrew Lomas LEAFLET: Andrew Lomas

CONSERVATIVE leaders have rounded on Wycombe’s Labour election candidate over ‘scurrilous’ claims in an election leaflet.

Conservative councillors hit out yesterday at Andrew Lomas’s claims about the local Tory record on hospital bed blocking and council rents.

They said there had been massive improvements for the first topic – and Mr Lomas had got his facts wrong for the second.

He branded Buckinghamshire County Council ‘uncaring’ for how its social services teams got patients out of hospital, freeing up clinical beds.

It says: “Tory-run Bucks County Council’s social services are one of the worst offenders when it comes to bed-blocking.

“Not only does this affect poorly and vulnerable people, it wastes taxpayers’ money by taking up hospital beds that could be better used.”

Yet Councillor Patricia Birchley, spokesman for adult and family wellbeing at the council, hit back at its full meeting yesterday.

She said: “The number of delayed transfers of care has reduced by more than half and we are now well below the national average.”

Cllr Birchley said: “Maybe it was a problem but that is scurrilous – it is not there any more.”

And Wycombe District Council leader Cllr Lesley Clarke told The Bucks Free Press she was furious about other claims in the leaflet over housing.

It refers to a U-turn on council housing rents in May last year where the increase was slashed from 6.2 to 3.1 per cent (see link, bottom of story).

It reads: “HUMILIATED: Tory-run Wycombe District Council was left red-faced when its shameless attempts to hike rents in the middle of a recession were over-ruled by the Government.”

Both claims were headed “The REAL face of Cameron’s Conservatives.”

Yet Cllr Clarke said rents are set by the Government and not the council.

She said: “I believe that he is working to bring the council into disrepute. It was his Government that caused the problem in the first place.”

Last night Mr Lomas hit back.

In a statement, he said of social services: “We are told that things are finally getting better. Whilst this is to be welcomed, the people in the town who I speak to recognise who created this mess in the first place.

“If the bed blocking has to get as bad as it has before the Tories acknowledge there is a problem, then I dread to think how far further other services in Wycombe have to slip before the issues are acknowledged.”

And he said of the housing row “I’m disappointed that the Conservatives feel the need to bring the debate down to attacks on personality, when housing in the town is such an important topic.

“The fact is that, during an economic downturn, a Labour government has chosen to invest in housing – to limit rent rises for those on modest incomes. This should be applauded.”

Clarke has great cheek to pass comment -- Her Tory council is destroying High Wycombe

Labour is destroying our national services

Both locally and Nationally i would support the Lib Dems

This tory run council is a shambles and get worse year on year. But unfortunately there is such a deep rooted blue in this area that things will never change and while our services get worse, their wages get better.

Perhaps this sack your MP business should be further extended to being able to sack poor councillors as well.

the lib dems are no better than any of the other two parties. the only way we will ever get real change is to vote for one of the smaller parties.

I think we all know and I don't think any of us cares to be honest.
You and your crony timetogoclarke are like a couple of stuck records....

WDC needs no help to bring it into disrepute, it's doing a good enough job on its own. Closes a swimming pool to save £12,000 a year and then puts up £750,000 to help a friend pay his back taxes. Wants to sell of council houses to raise another £10 million to pay for its other mistakes.

I'm more worried about the Conservative leaflet I got through my letterbox addressed to me. I'm not the main householder, (unless there's something I don't know about). Nor did I ever sign up for anything.

I'm shocked! A couple of Lib Dem members moaning about the Council that was swept to power by the REAL people of Wycombe and Buckinghamshire. PS. Also suprised you didn't mention that pool NOBODY used.

Maybe it would be better to call it the pool that NOBODY knew about?

Summertime is just around the corner, it would sure be nice if there was an open-air pool by a river and vast grass areas that people could go to... oh wait.

Not surprised it was never used considering the council only seemed to oped it a couple of weeks every year.

The Conservatives know they are in dire trouble. On my way to work, which is 55 miles. I have only seen Conservative propaganda boards by the sides of the road. One weekend I went for a drive until I found something else. I did and it was UKIP. If they had spent the money from those boards on keeping Wycombe running, I'm sure we'd have no pot holes, a fully open outdoor pool and then they could claim all the expenses they liked with the rest.

Elections are fought like playground arguments. Whoever can slag of the others the best is the winner.

Labour and Lib Dems moan about the Tory controlled council here, but when you look round the rest of the country you find similar situations where either Labour or the Lib Dems have control.
~
I have no doubt that things would not get any better if there was a change of ruling party. Some things would get better ... and some things would get much worse.
~
You find that councils controlled by parties that are different from the party that forms central government also get a raw deal.

What have we ever done to them?

Why do all of you slag off the Tory run WDC? If they are that bad then don't vote for them Simples.

The problem is that the alternatives are just as awful!

Wycombe District Council lost £2.5 million in Iceland.
.
Bucks County Council lost £5 million in Iceland.
.
Bucks County Council just wrote off £1.1 million because they couldn't reconcile their payroll for the past 5 or 6 years.
.
How bad do you have to be to be called incompetent?
