Reverend hits out at "vulgar" theatre advertising

AN OUTRAGED church minister has demanded a “vulgar” advertising campaign for a forthcoming Wycombe Swan show aimed at “frenzied women” to be stripped from billboards.

Rev Peter Simpson of Penn Free Methodist Church, says he was shocked at just how much he was offended by the marketing for the theatre's up coming Girls' Night Out production.

The show, likened to The Full Monty, follows a group of women on a hen night and a troupe of male strippers performing at the 'Feast of Flesh' contest and plays the theatre next month.

Rev Simpson called the show's promo image of a naked man, holding a thong in his hand with the Girls Night Out logo covering his modesty, an “appalling example to children”.

And he handed a letter of complaint to the St Mary Street-based theatre calling for the “in your face” promo to be pulled from around the town.

He said: “The Swan's brochure, which landed on my door mat, has a full page image of a male stripper parading himself in a state of full-frontal nudity before what we assume is an audience of frenzied women – it shocked me.

“I didn't expect to be so offended by it and I would probably forgot about it - but I went to the train station, it's there, you drive down Marlow Hill and you can see the giant billboard - it's just worse then anything else we've had to put up with.

“This kind of image cannot be blandly dismissed as bit of harmless fun.

“The advert is vulgar, and panders to lust. The Swan has to cater for a wide variety of tastes but that does not mean that an anything-goes approach is appropriate.

“How shall we ever tackle the problems of the sexualisation of children and of teenage pregnancies, which is rife in society, if the adult world sets this kind of appalling example?

“People may say this is old fashioned and ask what right has Christianity to impose its morality upon society? But what right has a libertine to do so?

“I pass on the words of Proverbs chapter 14, verse 34 : Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”.

Wycombe Swan marketing manager Abi Singleton said the theatre presents an “eclectic programme of theatre events, endeavouring to appeal to a large cross section of society.”

She added the production had played around the country to “rave reviews” about its “funny and touching storyline” and was sure it was 'upon this premise we have sold many tickets'.

Wycombe District Council, which leases the theatre to HQ Theatres, said marketing of productions was the responsibility of the theatre company.

It's nice to see someone taking a stance against the moral corruption that blights our society today.
~
The last thing we need in Wycombe is for the minds of the townspeople to be corrupted and for the thoughts of the devil to get a foothold in our town.
~
I am however shocked that the minister is prepared to be pictured holding a promotional leaflet for the event. My morals are so high that I would never been seen with such a leaflet let alone allow myself to be photographed....

This is the guy who stirs up religious hatred in High Wycombe. Most weeks he he seen and unfortunately heard spouting off from his book of myths telling everyone they are sinners, supported by his little band of helpers, all very sad. I think he believes we should all be God fearing people, well as there is no God I don't fear him, never have never will. What he should do is keep his big mouth shut and his very narrow minded thoughts to himself because if someone engaged in the conversation with him and it got a bit loud they would be arrested and he would walk of free. I am not a sinner, I don't have the need to shout about what is right and what is wrong because I'm sure I would be arrested for it, but he goes on about being a good Christian and insulting people with his religous claptrap and nothing is done about him. Well I know many so called Christians and they are not nice people, they have only one view on life and they believe in the book of myths. They say money is the root of all evil, well religion is the root of all evil.

According to him, if you're gay, then off to hell you go, along with all the muslims, adulterers, single mothers and non-believers. How he gets away with it i don't know.

I was once told by this nasty little man that, as a Jew, I would burn in hell - so much for Christian tolerance. Mind you, if heaven is reserved for idiots like him then I'd certainly rather spend all of eternity elsewhere. Hopefully his daft little crusade will merely result in more publicity and ticket sales for the show in question. Personally I find the image of a man's back and thighs on a theatre advert considerably less offensive than the church's systematic abuse of children in its care and the subsequent cover-up (and yes, I know he's not a Catholic, but it just shows that those who claim to follow the Bilbe are hardly in a position to lecture the rest of us about sexuality).

I think the point is is that for men to see women doing this sort of thing you must go to a somewhat seedy venue perched perilously on the borders of legality. This however is high street stuff, and kids can see it, and it appears to be perfectly acceptable.

It is also objectifying men, and seeing as objectifying women is top of the agenda for things to get rid of, it appears to be a little bit hypocritical and somewhat of a double standard.

However I do believe that sexual music videos featuring scantily clad women thrusting their pelvises around at phallic objects is a far more worrying and real thing that is being shoved down children of both genders throats from a very early age is a far more worrying matter.

I cannot understand why anyone would consider a poster depicting the back of someone's torso and legs to be in any way objectifying or overtly sexual. Comparing this show to visiting a lap dancing club is quite unreasonable, it is hardly the same thing - the advert is for a play whose story similar to that of the Full Monty. The performers are taking part out of their own free-will, and the audience, unlike the audience of a Spearmint Rhino club, are presumably not there to seek some kind of sexual gratification from the performance.
In my opinion it is far more important to protect children from being exposed to bigoted, intolerent, dogmatic religious viewpoints like Rev Simpson's, rather than worry about whether they catch a glimpse of a man's bare back.

I believe in God and Jesus and you obviously don't, at the end of the day why do you Atheists have to preach what you believe in if you don't like us Christians preaching to you about our beliefs.
I think you should sit down and think about you Athiest beliefs because if there wasn't a God then why is there so many religions around? Why does the law still go by the Bible then and how come religion is mentioned in nearly ever topic when if it wasn't true that there is a God. Because Courts etc. would swear by the book of Harry Potter if it was just a fairy tale people believed in.
Like I said, I BELIEVE in God and I will not be put down for doing so, so come on people moan at me cause I don't care how nasty any of you will be to me for that.

I understand why this show at the Wycombe show will offend people, I do not understand why woman are seen or want to be seen as sex objects all the time now. There is too many young girls already out there now who like to copy all this and go out in mini skirts and high heels at the age of 10 and there parents permit it and its only cause of all the programmes and the shows that have nude or sexual seens in it.

Oh, and Katie - you are absolutely right - no-one should be forcing their views on others, so us Atheists should not be preaching.

...maybe you should mention this to the rev, as he is the one trying to force his views on us - telling us how we should and shouldn't dress.

Furthermore, I find it very difficult to take this seriously when your good book consistently condones rape and murder:

As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you. (Deuteronomy 20:10-14)

Check also:

(Numbers 31:7-18 NLT) - Moses and God approves of rape of virgin

Judges 21:10-24 NLT - women were repeatedly raped

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB - Kill the victims of rape

Deuteronomy 21:10-14 NAB - God approves of forcible rape

...to name but a few.

Nice bloke that God. But then you knew all that already - because you wouldnt believe in him and follow his ways blindly, or just because someone told you to. Would you?

True, people should not force their beliefs on others - but that is exactly what this reverend is doing. If he is going to come out in public to criticise and condemn others, then we have a right of reply.
I adore the way that you chastise atheists for "preaching" on here before declaring why you think they're all wrong. You ask why there are so many religions around if there isn't a God - well, there are around a billion Buddhists, Shintoists and Taoists in the world who have never believed in a god, just as there are many indigenous australasian and american belief systems which do not follow a god. The only reason why the Abrahamic religions are so widespead is because of there history of conquest and subjugation of anyone who didn't follow them.
There are hundreds of commandments in Deuteronomy which are not part of the law here, so the law certainly doesn't "go by the Bible" - if it did then marital rape would be legal, as would slavery, and eating pork or shellfish and wearing clothes made of more than one material would be banned.

Katie, you obviously hold very strong views, and that is not a bad thing. However, your comment does carry overtones of trying to impose your views onto other people:

"I think you should sit down and think about you Athiest beliefs because if there wasn't a God then why is there so many religions around?"

You are a committed Christian. But faith is a choice. I fall closer to the 'Christian' denomination than any others, and my opinion has always been that if God exists, and, let's face it, none of us actually KNOW if 'He' does or not, he will judge people more by what they do than what they believe - otherwise, if he does exist, he would not have made believing in him optional - do you see?
.
Mind you, I happen to think it would be wonderful if there was indeed a higher being, but it was Zeus. All the wars and fighting there has been over the last 2000 years, and then we discover 'oh bother, the ancient Greeks had it right. Darnation'.
.
As for the over-sexualisation of children, this is indeed due in part to tv programmes etc, but not in whole; this has always been an issue throughout history, from 9 year old girls marrying 30 year old men in history, through to the writings of the Marquis de Sade. It is the same argument as for violence in films; it is the responsibility of the individual (or their parents, depending on age) to understand the difference between fiction and real life.
.
My (long-winded) point is that you cannot decree in one moment for all atheists to stop 'preaching', and then turn round in the next sentence and proceed to lay out the reasons that the beliefs (or lack thereof) of atheists are incorrect.

Righty then! The Atheist versus Christianity argument, isn't really on the table here, but what is, is a definite need to look at what is really important here. I've been 'ticked' off on many occasions on my walks in to town by the news that 'if I don't repent I'm done for.' I let it slide. If we're looking at the picture of a man's back and legs, which is all we can see, then maybe someone should be questioning the pictorial representation of Jesus Christ on the cross. It pains me to see fickle people picking up on fickle issues. This town is in a state of benefit-ridden depravity. In fact I have recently realised that if I was to quit my job, refuse to work and knock up an 18yr old a couple of times, I'd be earning a few thousand pounds more a year. Is it the fact that the dear reverend doesn't quite have the figure to compete, or is it that fact that the medieval concept of morals is far too outdated to be applied to contemporary society? Religion aside, this is just another example of people wasting their time and opinions where they may as well be scrubbing the spit from our pavements.
