Conservative Wycombe candidate Steve Baker apologises over leaflet claim

A CONSERVATIVE election candidate has apologised to a Liberal Democrat rival over a claim in campaign literature – and is accused of potentially misleading voters over another.

Steve Baker apologised after saying ‘Lib Dems want to abolish grammar schools’ in a leaflet handed to shoppers in High Wycombe on Saturday.

Lib Dem candidate Steve Guy said this was not party policy – though he personally wanted selection at the age of 11 to end.

And he hit out at another leaflet which said Mr Baker would not claim for a second home – even though this right has been abolished in light the expenses scandal.

Mr Baker said of the grammar claim: “I was referring to Steve Guy and I apologise for not using Steve Guy specifically in literature.

“If you vote Lib Dem here you are voting for Steve Guy’s abolition of grammar schools.”

The leaflet also says Labour wants to abolish selection.

Candidate Andrew Lomas has said he wants the system scrapped but the party’s manifesto while ruling out a ‘return to the 11-plus’ does not pledge to close existing grammars.

Mr Guy accused the Tory candidate of ‘scaremongering’ He said: “It is categorically not true. There is no plan by me or the Lib Dems to do with the grammar school system in Buckinghamshire.”

The candidate said the party ‘do not have a national policy’ and said the issue is not mentioned in its manifesto.

Yet he said: “My personal view is, yes, I want to abolish 11+ selection.”

And he attacked another leaflet from Mr Baker which said the Conservative would not claim a second home – even though this entitlement had been abolished under expenses reforms (see link, bottom of story).

It said: “He lives in West Wycombe and will commute to Parliament, and will not claim a second home allowance.”

Mr Guy said: “If anyone has received the impression from that that any of the other candidates would be taking a second home then they would be misled.

“It is not an issue any more – and quite rightly.”

Yet Mr Baker said: “We just left it in to make it clear.”

He said: “There was no intention to mislead – it is simply stating that is the fact.”

Mr Baker – who is the bookies’ favourite to win the seat – said he had made it ‘absolutely clear’ he would not claim for a second home since being selected in October.

He is replacing Wycombe MP Paul Goodman, who announced last year he is stepping down over his disillusionment with Parliament. He claimed mortgage interest on a second home in High Wycombe.

Labour candidate Mr Lomas has also hit headlines over a leaflet which attacked Tory-run councils in Bucks over hospital bed blocking and a move to ‘hike’ council house rents (see link, bottom of story).

Buckinghamshire County Council said Mr Lomas did not use latest figures which showed the situation had improved – while Wycombe District Council said rents were set by Government.

Oh don't be silly. As the potential next MP, Steve Guy has no power to abolish grammar schools even if he wanted to.

Selection could only ever be abolished if Bucks parents voted for it.

Perhaps Steve Baker should also apologise for being affiliated to an organisation that brought out of it PHILIPPA STROUD.. who believes that gay people can be cured through prayer http://www.guardian.

This seat isn't a marginal seat, so tactical voting makes no difference whatsover and i will vote for the party i believe in to fight for equality and fairness rather than hate and bigotry. And have a clear conscience.. i dont think tory voters should be sleeping so well these days...

Perhaps the Tory candidate would also like to apologise for Clarke and her Tory cronies mismanagent of Wycombe-- closing pool, selling off towns heritage and refusing to accept the results of consultations -- Of course not he is as bad as Clarke !!!!!

Perhaps Steve Guy should apologise for ignoring his consitutuents in Totteridge. Regarding Lib Dem education policy, they are committed to dismantling both Academies and Faith Schools, so don't be fooled into thinking that Grammer Schools are safe just because Clegg doesn't mention them in the Manifesto - Steve Guy wants to abolish Grammer shcools, and so does the central Party - they just decided not to tell you, a bit like how they forgot to say how they will afford all of their election spending promises.

Tory policy is abolishing grammar schools. Cameron said not to sort the sheep from the goats at age 11.
Steve Guy has helped many people in Totteridge with their personal problems so he can't boast about that!! It is confidential. He has done so well that he has been voted leader.

You've all be lied to about academies.... these are publicly funded independent schools.... you pay but you have no say... exclusion rules are different, and those excluded are dumped into the surrounding sec mods which will eventually become sink schools. It's a fraud against the public, they havent proven to be any more effective than comprehensives.

The richest have the money to get tutors to get their children into grammars, they dont benefit the majority, otherwise there would be twice a many grammars in the county as opposed to sec mods, but there isnt its the other way around.

.. you can really tell when some tory comes on here and spews rubbish about grammar schools.
They look down on kids on sec mods, who already feel like they've failed when they start.

hence why it's a good thing to want to get rid of academies

It was Cameron who says that 'the sheep should not be seperated from the goats' at age 11 is it not! Such hypocrisy from Tories.

If the seat (Wycombe) isn't marginal, then why is Steve Baker behaving like this?

On the subject of Conservative candidates with fertile imaginations:
"I was in Plymouth recently and a 40-year-old black man actually made the point to me. He said: 'I came here when I was six, I served in the Royal Navy for 30 years' ". So this man who Dave "met" must have joined the RN when he was 10 then?

He also forgot to tell the voting public was that his short sighted, two faced, pompus stuck party intend to bring back hunting. That means foxes, stags, hares and otters will be hunted again. So it's up to you to stop these nasty people killing wildlife, they are nothing but disgusting human beings who should be ashamed of themeslves. They make me sick...

Labour are irrelevant in Wycombe. On Saturday afternoon there was a heavy presence by Tories and Lib Dems in the town. Labour gave up and went home at lunchtime. I think they know the game is up.

We've had no flyers or anything at all from Labour - will probably have to vote tactically (not that that will make any difference to the result of course)! The Bucks Free press vote looks close though so I guess we can dream...

Labour has been running a stall at the market once per month since September last year.
.
The Tories and Lib Dems come out in the last weeks and think they invented the idea!

TheTeachersUnion says...

was it an invisible stall ?

lidopraiser says...

I guess Labour have gradually losing support locally and have no councillors left. That is why they can only manage a stall and no door knocking, leaflets or posters. That has enabled Lib Dems to overtake them and challenge the Tories on cuts and for this general election. To keep Tories out in Wycombe its gotta be Lib Dems.

Yippee

Gotta get rid of the Tories in Wycombe. I've had enough of the attitude of Clarke and Green and the arrogance of the Tories in Wycombe. The MP Goodman wasn't any better he never spoke out against the Tory council. The current Tory candidate is just as bad !!
Im sending a strong message by voting Lib Dem --
