The case against a schizophrenic who stabbed and beat his house mate to death was formally closed today (July 8).

Adrian Johnson, 27, killed Robert Lewis, 49, on May 4 this year in a home for vulnerable people on Cheam Road in Sutton. It is believed Mr Johnson had run out of his medication over the bank holiday weekend.

He later hanged himself in Belmarsh prison on May 13.

During a brief hearing at the Old Bailey today, the case was formally closed by Judge Michael Lawson QC.

It emerged in court that Mr Johnson had beaten Mr Lewis with a dumbell as well as stabbing him in the arms and legs.

Questions have been raised by family members as to whether Mr Johnson received the correct level of care from the South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust and whether he should have been housed in a non-supervised home.

South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust have announced that an independent review is looking into the care of Mr Lewis.

A coroner is now investigating Mr Johnson's death in custody, prior to a full inquest.
