Buckinghamshire councillors visit High Speed 1 in Kent

OPPOSITION to controversial plans for a high speed rail route grew this week after councillors visiting an existing line and said it was "scary".

Members of Chiltern District, Aylesbury Vale District and Bucks County Councils were amongst those to visit Kent on Friday to look at the impact another high speed rail project has had on the countryside there.

And they said the visit had reinforced their views on the plans – with one councillor saying she was ”determined" to take action.

If given the go-ahead, a new high speed railway line between London and Birmingham would cut through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and tunnel underneath Amersham and the Chalfonts. News of the project, called High Speed 2, has sparked outrage amongst residents.

Chiltern District Council cabinet member Mimi Harker said of Friday's trip to Kent: “It's opened my eyes to the reality of the situation.

“When you look at plans on paper it's very difficult to conjure up the image of how it's going to look.

“It's a bit scary to think of something of this magnitude literally carving its way through the Chiltern area. It's made me more determined to get involved and do something about it.”

Cllr Harker added: “Come and have a look at this and you will see exactly why we shouldn't have HS2.”

The county council's portfolio holder for transport, Cllr Val Letheren, said: “I still firmly believe it's not the right place, to build it in Buckinghamshire. It should be built along the West Coast mainline.”

Members of the delegation met with Kent County Council's former planning officer Chris Waite, who guided them along the route and explained what campaigners in Buckinghamshire could do fight the proposals.

They are hardly likely to say "oh this looks very nice, i think we should have one to" are they???

Apart from Inspector Clouseau on the bridge, think the pictures look quite good.

As a traveller of the selling kind doing 40,000 a year I would urge anyone passing Maidstone Services on the M20 to stop there and stand on the bridge over the HS1 line. The noise is indescribable, not unlike stading near an airport runway.
I wouldn't want that anywhere near my house, meaning at least a mile away minimum.

The HS2 people want it to be 4 track not 2 track as HS1 is.

It's not a "horrific juxtaposition" it's just a train line!! We have built railway lines in this country for over 200 years and our nation has been all the better for them.

This is called progress and we need it if we are to get dirty polluting road traffic off the congested roads.

I am a lover of the countryside but however beautiful the Chilterns are they are on the edge of Europe's biggest city and they are going to need to have transport links cut through them. All those who want to live in unspoilt countryside can clear off to Scotland or Wales but I suspect they would rather stay in Bucks because of the good transport links to London - how ironic!!

I worked in a building next to the Paddington to Reading train line and it was not much fun I can tell you when a high speed travelling at half the HS2 speeds went past.
.
It was worse in summer when we had to keep the windows open because of the lack of air conditioning.
.
I would not fancy one running past my house.

FP - I don't think anyone objects to a train line. What they all object to is an AONB being raped. Because there is no need for it. Not only that but what of the wildlife that will be affected?
I keep saying this and sadly people are so insular... the earth does NOT belong to mankind. We share it with a lot of other living creatures - all of whom have as much right to live here in peace as we do.
Call me a tree hugger if you will - I am proud to be so.
And why should people's lives be ruined - to rub it in, the train is not even going to stop here.
It is only going to Birmingham to begin with and there are plenty of good routes to Birmingham already.

What a stupid woman. Doesn't she know that the WCML also goes through Bucks?
