Day surgery ward closed at Wycombe Hospital

A DAY surgery ward at Wycombe Hospital has been closed, as health bosses consult on a shake-up of staff and beds.

The closure of ward 8 looks set to have knock-on effects for at least two other wards in the hospital's Treatment Centre.

Under the plans, set to be implemented by the end of September, most day cases will be sent to 12a, another surgery ward.

Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust said the closure of ward 8 was due to less beds being needed, but said no redundancies were planned.

Consultation documents seen by the Bucks Free Press show the move will also affect the hospital's urology cancer unit - a specialist unit also located in the Treatment Centre.

All colorectal and vascular patients, currently assigned to ward 12a, will be relocated to urology, according to the documents.

This has led to some fears among staff that more pressure will be placed on the urology ward, the Bucks Free Press understands.

This follows news last week that health bosses are consulting on plans to merge 4a and 4b, two wards for older people, at the Queen Alexandra Road hospital (see link below).

Trust spokesman Lisa Perry initially said the urology unit would see “no change” as a result of the shake-up, but later conceded it “may also include some colorectal and vascular surgery inpatients”.

She said: “The unit will continue to provide cancer care by specialist cancer nurses and will also treat surgical inpatients. We are proud of our urology unit and will continue to develop this service. Any departmental accreditation will be unaffected.”

She said the trust is now able to offer more rehabilitation services and 'step-down' facilities in community hospitals such as in Marlow.

“This has allowed us to refocus what happens within our acute wards,” she added. “As a result, there is less need for as many hospital beds in our surgical wards and it is important we make the best use of the space we have available.

“There are no proposed redundancies associated with this development and patient care will not be affected in any way.”

The consultation document says some staff may be redeployed in the shake-up.

It reads: “Whilst it is envisaged to maintain the employment of staff within the Treatment Centre, redeployment to either an alternative site or division may be necessary.”

It also states that ward 8, the now closed day surgery ward, is “part of the older estate of the trust and currently does not provide the required standard of accommodation”.

If the writing is not on the wall then it is almost certainly being carried on in secret e-mails and private discussions.

Wycombe Hospital as we know it will close and a new, much, much smaller hospital built somewhere else. More services will be moved out without the possibility of return because the new building won't be large enough to house them.

The current site near to the town centre will be sold to developers to help fund the new hospital.

This is already on the cards, but the Health Authority will only say the "it is not in their plans". Later when they unveil it they will say that their plans had to change because of current conditions BUT look, we're giving you a brand new state of the art hospital (even if it is only 25% of the size of the old one!)

Has anyone told them that we are not stupid?

I think I said on this site last year that our hospital will close. It will slowly be run down to nothing. I'm sorry BigTommy, but we will NOT be getting another hospital built on the site or any other site. The money recouped will go straight into the funding of Stoke Mandeville. We will be one of the largest towns in the country with NO hospital. Not a very good claim to fame. I suppose its one way to put people off from settling in the area therefore the need for more homes would be less.

It's so so scary tho, especially when you have children and Grandchildren (in a disaster etc. or any other emergency) that you have to travel so far and Wycombe hospital was only built in 1968!"!

It's all part of a major plan to close the hospital, and build a football/rugby stadium in it's place.

The new stadium to be called Loakes Park...

Probably more like it, yet again i made the same comment about the old library a couple of weeks ago and the BFP censor Nazi's removed that comment. Obviously wasn't politically correct enough for them.

Aside from the fact that it is "Mr Cameron, NOT Mr Caneron"!, Wycombe hospital has been in decline for a very long time, NOT the small amount of time That Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg have been in Government! - Get a grip. (Security word: Deny - past), oh very good, would seem that is what chesham20 is doing here!!!

Both of them put together are far better than that to**er Mr Brown.

He ruined this country, unless you went down the path of living off benefits, in which case Brown would be your best buddy.

It will be sad if Wycombe Hospital has to close.

I completely agree with this comment and Mr Blackett's earlier comment.
To quote from Mr Baker's maiden speech in parliament,
"Paul's top priority was Wycombe hospital, and I have to say for the benefit of the Bucks Free Press that it will be my top campaigning priority. I mean that sincerely; no other issue compares to it, in terms of its ability to create anxiety and concern".
There are lies, damned lies and staistics. This was attributed to Disraeli and adopted by Mark Twain.
Substitute politics for statistics and we have the current-day equivalent.
What are MPs paid for?
Mr Baker does not seem to be giving value for money as a representative of his constituents. A statement of his position would be much appreciated and, as he has referred to the Bucks Free Press in his inaugural speech, maybe his views would be appropriate in that publication as a post-election up-date on quite where he stands.

Unfortunately many are , more people are interested in the next episode of Eastenders and Coronation Street than that of the future of their local Hospital or town and don't the powers that be know it. We could learn a thing or two from the French i;m afraid.
