Car park and interchange for Wycombe train station

CONSTRUCTION on a new multi-storey car park and transport interchange at High Wycombe train station is to begin on Tuesday.

The new car park will bolster the amount of parking available to commuters at the station off Amersham Hill by 200 spaces, taking the capacity up to 650 parking spots.

A transport interchange will also be constructed in the entry to the station forecourt to 'improve traffic management' and enable buses to drop off and pick up commuters.

Work on the £5m project is due to begin on Tuesday and Chiltern Railways says it expects it to be completed by March. Parking fees for the new car park have yet to be revealed.

Chad Collins, general manager south of Chiltern Railways, said: “This is going to change travel for commuters of High Wycombe station, making it easier to get to the station by bus or by car.

“This comes at a time when we are also currently completing a £250 million investment to give passengers a quicker commute, reducing the journey time from High Wycombe station to London Marylebone to just 25 minutes for the May 2011 timetable.”

80 parking spaces adjacent to the Goods Shed building will be out of action during this period but they will be relocated into the new multi-storey car park.

Further parking spaces will also be closed off as the construction progresses but the rail firm says passengers will be kept updated via noticeboards and its website.

Commuters are urged to use alternative town centre car parks, the Cressex Park & Ride, Beaconsfield or Great Missenden train stations or the Chiltern Carshare scheme.

Mr Collins added: “There is going to be disruption for our passengers who drive to the station.

"We are working with Wycombe District Council and Buckinghamshire County Council to provide alternative parking for our passengers.”

For more information and train timetables visit www.chilternrailways.co.uk or visit www.chilterncarshare.co.uk for more information on the car share scheme.

The carpark is for commuters - how will it increase traffic when these are people who use the train anyway and probably park in residential roads near the station, thus causing all sorts of problems.
A shuttle bus that goes from the train station to the bus station will encourage more people to use public transport - a good thing surely.

Shame the bus station was built so far away...

Forward thinking town planning there!

Well I'm sure we could have knocked down Crendon Street and built it there...

In theory yes, but we all know how often theories that are put to the test seem to have floors in them. I can see commuters that normally would use another station because of the lack of parking space, suddenly change stations for departure. We'll see just how many use the shuttle bus service. Yes a good thing if all goes as it is intended, BUT time will tell.

The current station car park simply isn't big enough for current demand.
-
If you turn up after 9am it's already full and you have to park in the Multi-Storey.
-
This isn't a major issue as there is always room in the latter, but if you are in a rush you might miss the train you were aiming for.
-
The car park expansion is probably driven by the revenue Chiltern Railways is missing out on @ £6 per day per car that diverts to the Multi-Storey, but that's fair enough.
-
I hope the plans incorporate a new traffic flow system. The current (non-existent) one is totally chaotic with the taxis, short stay and long stay cars all trying to cut across each other and funnel out through a single exit pinch point. And there's always one muppet parked across it, sitting there reading the paper, apparently oblivious to the delays they are causing for everyone else.

I'm sure the council have a spare set or two of traffic lights lying around somewhere.

About time. It isn't nice walking to easton street car park at night on your own in the winter (women). Even though it is a short walk.

i think the best part of this plan is where they are redeveloping the original station opposite the interchange. which will be a nicer first impression of Wycombe than a crumbling factory and a taxi shack

unles the plans have changed from those I saw submitted to planning, there will be a new road all the way around the "goods shed" so a new road runs along bridcage walk, to the junction opposite castle street

this means the whole walk to esaton street multi storey will be much more open and easy to see and direct as you will be able to go straight out of the station, across the forecourt into easton street
