'Garden grab' home plan in High Wycombe rejected

FEARS over 'garden grabbing' led to plans for a new house in a High Wycombe residential area being rejected last night.

Planning officers had recommended proposals for a new three bedroom house and car parking space at the corner of Hughenden Avenue and Kelvin Close be approved.

But members of Wycombe District Council's planning committee turned them down because of the impact it would have on neighbours.

Worried residents had sent in 28 letters of objection to the plans and a petition containing 52 signatures.

They said the plans, which were made by Hester Homes, were an example of “garden grabbing” and would lead to a loss of privacy to neighbours.

A tree would have been cut down to make way for the attached car parking bays.

Cllr Richard Pushman described the plans as “cramming of the worst possible type”, adding the plans “haven't enhanced, but intensified” development at the site.

Cllr Alan Hill said the plans would be “detrimental” to other residents of Hughenden Avenue.

He said: “These corners are there for a reason. To build in there would absolutely spoil the street scene.”

Cllr Hugh McCarthy said: “It seemed to me when it was planned, that particular corner was deliberately left open.

“To close it with a structure – and I accept it doesn't close all of it – substantially changes the openness of the site and that concerns me considerably.”

He added he was “surprised” no concerns over the impact on traffic had been raised by the county council.

The plans were rejected by nine votes to one because it would cause “overdevelopment” of the site and would be “detrimental to the established street scene”.

Well done WDC. Lets see if the same logic gets applied to the house proposed for the garden of The Harrow in Hughenden Valley.

Where is the consistency, two houses built in Baronsmead Road cars parked on grass verges councillors dont respond to letters, WDC cut services, random planning aprovals and fund a new staduim for Steve Hayes enterprises.

With alleged speculators, developers and their associates on the Council , what do you expect ? Some even live 30 odd miles away in Berks.
.
The composition of the WDC is in-bred and self-serving (allegedly). All the side effects of that can be seen week to week. It will all come out eventually . These organizations are not sustainable once internal disputes and in-fighting starts.
.
You read it here, in the BFP - but not reported by the BFP (allegedly).

We live on a corner plot with front access onto a main road, and rear access onto a side road. Since living in our property (18 years) we have had numerous letters through the post from builders asking to purchase the end of our garden from us. They also contact our immediate neighbours.

We bought this house because we wanted a large garden, and the front and rear access is very useful, and hopefully gives added value to our property. Why would we want a sprawling housing development and car parking at the bottom of our garden.

These 'garden grabbers' just don't get it.

Well said DC.
-
Those grabbers simply hope to find people who are thinking about moving away anyway, so are minded to cash in before they go. That's why the council needs to maintain a tough line to stop garden grabbing happening, even if the incumbent owner is willing to sell, and leave their former neighbours with the blight.
-
In the case of The Harrow in HV, we need to guard against a faceless property company based in Edinburgh(S&N spin-off) exploiting an 'asset' (also known as the garden of our one and only pub) for cash, when all the downsides will be borne in perpetuity by people who live in HV.
-
Of course, our useless Parish Council has opted to pass 'no comment' on the proposal from said faceless company, completely contrary to the line it has taken in the past.
-
And why? Because the same bunch of Parish Council muppets want to build 10 houses on our AONB Green Belt worked farmland one hundred yards up the road from the Harrow, despite nobody in HV wanting them.

And the helicopters still fly over checking out back gardens from lands end to john o groats. Where there once stood a house now stands 50 dwellings in every town in every village.Property developers are running rough shod over every acre of green and brown belt.Every council is giving them leeway to make it happen
