Poll: 'Ludicrous' turnout at cuts debate because public weren't aware

THE first public debate on council spending cuts in South Bucks was poorly attended because most people did not know it was happening, a poll suggests.

The Marlow meeting, one of a series of 'roadshows' organised by Buckinghamshire County Council, was labelled a 'nonsense' due to the 'ludicrous turnout' of just 22 on Friday.

(See related articles for full story.)

The majority of those who voted in an online poll conducted by the Free Press – 68 per cent or 458 votes– said they were not aware about it.

This was despite 10,000 leaflets being sent out and put in doctor's surgeries, libraries and other public places and coverage in the Free Press.

Nearly a quarter, 163, or 24 per cent, said they felt their opinion would not make a difference, while 23 people, three per cent, said they are intending to go to one closer to home.

Twenty one said the time and day were inconvenient, while two per cent (11 votes) said they will contribute through the council's website instead.

Cuts of more than £90m are in the offing as the council faces up to around a 25 per cent reduction in its funding.

Taxpayers can voice their views on where the axe should fall in High Wycombe on Monday at the library in Eden shopping centre from 10am.

Other meeting dates and how to contribute online can be seen on the links below.

The true reason for the majority of non-attendance or interest, as with most events with a political stance, is apathy/laziness (depending on how harsh you want to be).

Strangely, yet unsurprisingly, this was not an option in your poll.

I wont go for 2 reasons, firstly it'll make absolutely no difference, and secondly let the council take responsibility, I don't want to give them the ability to say 'well you told us to do it'.
Let them make the decisions, so that we can see where their loyalties really lie.

Although I comprehend what you are saying , s-d , as I do Not trust this council or its officers (based on recent and past history) I can only assume you are recommending a strategy of 'Laissez-faire' but in Reverse.
.
That means the electorate will not oppose any action taken by the council and its officers until after the event - that is no interference / protest by the public until it's too late.
.
That's how Al Capone and others of his ilk got control of Chicago and other cities. These people exist all over the world ; graft / corruption and self-interest is world-wide.
.
I am not (yet) accusing WDC of gangsterism but the people in power at the moment Can Not Be Trusted - viz several instances recently. They treat the folk of Wycombe and district with contempt and disdain , imo. Do not trust these people to do the right thing , it will be too late by then.
.
Public usage of the 'democratic' system is not a safe deterrent in these times , but it with give these devious people pause for thought when applied in the right circumstances.
.

I wish it were possible to issue municipal ASBOs to some councillors - they are a civic menace to all decent folk.

If the Conservatives wanted people to attend they would hold it in the evening in Wycombe.

They do not want the views of Wycombe because they know they will not like them.

Strange that 64% of people who took part in the BFP online poll (all BFP site users) say they didn't know the meetings were on.
~
But weren't the meetings listed on this site. If so that means that people will click a button in a colourful box, but don't read the articles.

If the meetings were not listed on this site - why not?

it is typical of our local authorities they do not speak to each other, let alone keeping us local tax payers informed. How else can anyone explain why the WDC Marlow Area Office never places banner advertisments across its window to publicise local council meetings. they really do not want us in attendance raising issues they prefer to deal with themselves without interference from us. their reputations have gone before them.

There may be some truth in what you say,but i have attended many of these consultations in the past, and have been belittled by the behaviour of some of our councilors. Watch out if you are given the opportunity to speak by a gentleman wielding a microphone, when they've had enough they take the mike away so that you cannot be heard, and who can forget our glorious leaders response at the 'consultation' about the pool when she threw her dollies out of the pram and stormed off, very proffessional.
It's kind of like banging your head against a wall, nice when it stops.
