A BUCKS soldier who dived into a canal to rescue a comrade after he was injured by a Taliban bomb is to be awarded for his bravery.

Second Lieutenant Connor Maxwell, 22, from Chalfont St Peter, showed “remarkable courage” to save a soldier who had been blasted in to the water by an improvised explosive device (IED).

Rifleman Daniel Nickson, 23, also of 3rd Battalion the Rifles, dived in alongside Lt Maxwell and helped him pull the soldier out of the fast-flowing water, enabling him to receive treatment.

The soldier had been unconscious and wearing over 60lbs of equipment.

The heroics in the Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 15 last year have been described by the Ministry of Defence for the first time.

Lt Maxwell also saved the life of a serviceman who was wounded by an IED while training on the firing ranges at Nato's Camp Bastion base in Helmand.

He is set to be awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery at a later date.

Why has this story been shoved down to 5th place in the order within minutes of it being placed in the site?

This deserves to be at the top so that Lieutenant Maxwell can be recognised for the hero he is.

Canal? You should see the BBC reports of this...very fast flowing!!!

Yes a hero, worthy of a gong sized medal...bear in mind of all the others that never get a mention.

Why can't we buy a few hundred "Daisy cutters?" I'm sure once a target is hit by one of those mothers, they won't keep shooting back. Bet the US has loads going cheap...one way of getting our boys back home where they belong.

I read this story on the BFP website and was hoping to reading more about this in the paper on Friday. I am amazed that this story did not feature anywhere in this week's paper!!

A local hero and he does not even get a mention. This hero should have been front page!
