Cheryl Gillan writes to minister with HS2 concerns

MP writes to minister with HS2 concerns MP writes to minister with HS2 concerns

CHERYL Gillan has written to the Transport Secretary about the environmental impact of High Speed Two, following calls for her resignation if the line goes ahead.

The Chesham and Amersham MP wrote to Phillip Hammond requesting the publication of the environmental impact assessment on the Chilterns and her constituency.

Mr Hammond had indicated that this would be published around the time of the start of the consultation, but Mrs Gillan wants an earlier release so experts and campaigners can examine any recommendations being made.

She said: “People should be assured that I will continue to highlight the concerns of local people with the Department for Transport about the proposed route which was published by the last Government.”

Mrs Gillan has also spoken to the Environment Agency and written formally to ask them if they can prepare a detailed report about the effect of such a project on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In recent weeks the Great Missenden Village Association has called for Mrs Gillan to resign from her cabinet role as Secretary of State for Wales if HS2 gets the go ahead (see link below).

Clearly a minister's pension is preferable to a back bencher's, but Gillan was voted in on an anti-HS2 ticket. Time to stand up publicly and fight the plan on the fatuous business case. I have no doubt she will be invisible, as she was at the Tory conference, when the funding is confirmed next week.

At least she is doing something, which is more than that prat Farage who wants to mince around trying to get his face on the TV by saying "Isn't it awful" soundbite, soundbite, soundbite. "Let's talk to some people who know it's awful and tell them how awful it is. Is the camera running boys?"

Prove that you have a backbone Gillan. Up the ante and threaten to resign. Bercow and Lidington should do the same.
