ANTI-stadium campaigners stepped up their protests with a leaflet campaign outside Adams Park this afternoon.

Hundreds of 'No To Booker' leaflets were handed out to fans making their way to Wanderers' match at home to Lincoln City today.

Joining campaigners was Wycombe District Councillor Darren Hayday, who is standing down from his position on the council in protest at the proposed new stadium.

Dressed in a Wycombe Wanderers shirt, Cllr Hayday, who represents Booker and Cressex, said he “didn't need any persuading” to join in the leaflet hand-out.

He said: “Five thousand people have responded to the consultation in the last week and I think it's either in direct response to the publicity the Bucks Free Press have given it or if they have London addresses writing off the back of what they clubs have done.

“I'm totally against the move to Booker and I'm glad there are so many people down here joining in the protest.”

Today's leaflet campaign was organised by Matt Clarke, who helped set up the 'No To Booker' protest group.

He said the turnout of support against the planned move away from Adams Park had been “amazing” and spelt out the appeal Wycombe Wanderers has in the community.

Mr Clarke said: “My son, who's ten, is handing out leaflets. I've supported Wycombe for 30 years and when he gets to my age I want him to be able to say, 'This is my club, I have campaigned for it and I believe in what was done all those years ago'.

“There are young guys through to people in their 60s – that's the appeal of Wycombe. It's a family club, and that's what we are going to lose.”

A council-led consultation over the plans closed yesterday.

Mr Clarke said: “People are welcome to their own opinion and we want to show both sides of the argument, not just one saying 'Wouldn't it be great having this stadium?'

“We're not here to oppose anything but there are a lot of people who don't feel represented and feel scared about what's going on.”

He added: “If it's shown we are wrong we will throw everything behind Steve Hayes, but until these fundamental questions are answered we won't.”

This week the Wycombe Wanderers Supporters' Trust announced they would oppose the stadium move.

“There's got to be something for the supporters' Trust to come out and say that,” said Mr Clarke. “I'm more and more confident we will make an impact and do our best to safeguard our club.”
