A PUBLIC vote on Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers building a stadium at Wycombe Air Park may be deferred until January.

Angry householders were due to trigger a referendum at a Great Marlow Parish Council meeting last night, having requested a 'parish poll'.

The air park, favoured by the clubs for a new larger capacity ground, is located in Booker, Great Marlow.

A group of residents planning to go to the meeting rang Cllr Janet Pritchard yesterday afternoon to say they wanted to wait until next month.

A referendum has to take place within four weeks once called and they believed the busy Christmas period would cause problems.

With so many residents no longer attending, and with ten required to trigger the poll, Cllr Pritchard said it was “unlikely” to be called last night.

The residents still plan to call the referendum by attending the next meeting on January 27.

But this will come after Wycombe District Council has announced its own verdict, following public consultation results.

While some residents are simply against the site being used for a new stadium, others are angry that WDC has become involved and has pledged cash towards investigating it.

Cllr Pritchard believes polls should be carried out by all neighbouring parish councils to aid “people power”.

The ballots are paid for by parish councils.

Once called, the district council is under a statutory duty to run the poll but the result is not legally binding.

Tonight's meeting takes place at Bovingdon Village Hall on from 7pm.
