A CONTROVERSIAL Incinerator proposal will be reconsidered next month after campaigners were successful in forcing a re-think.

Plans for a burner at Greatmoor, near Calvert, were sent back to Buckinghamshire County Council's cabinet to be re-examined earlier this month.

The scheme, for which Wapseys Wood in Beaconsfield was originally considered, was called in by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

But protesters, who claim the project endangers human health, will have to wait until February 28 to hear what will happen next.

A statement from BCC read: “The Cabinet decided that it would respond fully to these points at its next full meeting on February 28.

“This extended period will also ensure Cabinet has adequate time to consider the matters raised by the Committee and the detailed response from the Cabinet Member Martin Tett.”

The scrutiny committee questioned the robustness of the financial case.

In particular, it cited the risks of awarding such a long contract - 30 years - to Waste Recycling Group (WRG) to build the burner and run an 'energy from waste' facility.

It questioned how much public feeling had been considered and pointed out 'a significant risk of legal challenge to the procurement process at this point'.

Martin Tett, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment said he was “pleased to cooperate” with the scrutiny committee, describing it as “essential” to the democratic process.

He said: ”The Committee has seen for themselves how detailed and professional the procurement process has been.

“I am confident that we will address all the points raised by the Committee and we look forward to presenting the Cabinet's response.”

Stop Aylesbury Vale Incineration Limited, which was supported by Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, say they have demonstrated a better, cheaper, greener, alternative.

The group has pledged to keep fighting the plans.

Meanwhile Bucks Residents Against IncineratorS (BRAINS), who fought against the Beaconsfield proposal, said campaigners would be ready oppose a burner if attention turns back to South Bucks.
