MP backs 'in or out' EU referendum

MP backs 'in or out' EU referendum MP backs 'in or out' EU referendum

A CAMPAIGN for a national poll on whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union has been backed by Wycombe MP Steve Baker.

Those signing the 'people's pledge' have committed to only vote for MPs publicly promising to support a binding referendum on our EU membership - and to vote for it in the House of Commons.

Mr Baker is supporting the national “in or out” referendum.

“This is about self- determination. People should be given a democratic choice about whether we want to continue being ruled by a bunch of unelected commissioners in Brussels,” he said.

"Whether you want to be in the EU as it is today or not, it is right that the British people should have the opportunity to determine how they are governed at the ballot box.

“That's why I'm backing the People's Pledge and the campaign for a binding referendum on our EU membership."

Thousands have supported the pledge already.

The campaign’s website will break down voters’ pledges by parliamentary seat, enabling MPs and candidates to see the level of support in their constituency.

Backbench MP Mr Baker said: "For several years, I was pro-EU out of fondness for Europe and its people until the awful EU Constitution was democratically rejected and replaced with the functionally identical Lisbon Treaty. “We all want peace with Europe and most of us want free trade too, but not at the expense of sacrificing democracy to the will of a little elite.”

And he applauded Wycombe District Council for passing a motion on February 28 attacking the likely 2.8 per cent increase in the EU budget.

Tory Councillor James Malliff said the rise was wrong in the light of “massive” cuts WDC and other local authorities face.

Cllr Malliff and Mr Baker have presented the council's motion to Europe Minister David Lidington – the Aylesbury MP.

A national issue ... no wonder Mr Baker has an opinion. He still can't be bothered to have an opinion on local issues that might be contentious or be deemed to go against his friends on the Tory council.
.
It's about time that Baker thought more about his constituents on local issues, than ones that might help promote his own political ambitions.
.
What's the betting that if Clarke and Green are ousted at the elections in May because of the stadium debacle that he will suddenly come out against the scheme.
.
Sorry, I still have no time for self-centred politicians of any hue.

Pity that Europe is still the macho issue for this country's politicians. I had high hopes when Tony Blair came in promising to be leading at the heart of Europe. When the going got tough the good intentions were quickly ditched in favour of "fighting our corner" macho talk. In any case, we have much more pressing issues here, such as NHS, education, etc, etc. Why waste money on another referendum. AV will be dead in the water, I guess.

We need the AV referendum to pass so our MP can no longer think he is in a safe seat.

Make Baker work harder.

Vote Yes in May

Does Steve Baker think he has been elected as a MEP or something?

He sits on the fence over local issues but gets involved in Europe. I can't quite figure the man.

Why is it "In or Out". Why not present the case better. Does the UK want to be Like Switzerland and Norway - In Europe and Free to trade with Europe. (EEA members) or a member of a group that wants to become the United States of Europe.
Its not In or Out.
Its Free to Trade with or be Governed By. Is that a choice?

This is an hypothetical question apparently posed by what appears to be the hypothetical representative of the voters of Wycombe. He's not interested in local issues at all , it is rightly alleged.
.
Who does he represent , I wonder

Oh dear. You've noticed.
Why it's Steve something-or-other.

I've worked it out!

Steve Baker is really a UKIP MP in sheep's clothing!

My view is that the EU has managed to stop European countries going to war with each other since 1945.

That is a price worth paying.

No wars - that's debatable, imo. In fact I think the EU have exacerbated some situations.
.
It's not the people who cause division and conflict - it's the Politicians.
.
And Politicians run the EU ( not the People). It has all the hallmarks of an extreme dictatorial self-perpetuating greedy oligarchy which is very difficult to change or get rid of in any way
.
And this massive dogmatic self-righteous oligarchy (please note they are never wrong) has the nerve to criticize people like Gaddafi. I suppose it takes one load of difficult-to-remove dictators to recognize another one.
