WITH a monster obsessed with porn, a character called Lucy the Slut and songs such as 'Everyone's A Little Bit Racist', Avenue Q is not what you would usually expect from a musical but that is what makes it so popular.

It launched in Broadway back in 2003 and has since ventured to the UK bringing a sharp and witty show which provides many laugh out loud moments.

There are singing puppets played alongside humans as the audience follows the story of Princeton- an English graduate, who finds himself on a dilapidated street in New York and goes on to meet the street's varied characters.

Some of the songs and themes could be a bit risqué but as it is puppets having sex on stage and puppets singing a song called The Internet is for Porn- they somehow get away with it.

Like Sesame Street, there is a moral to each story but again it is all tongue in cheek and it is hard not to leave the theatre smiling.

Rachel Jerram is amazing as Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut as is Adam Pettigrew as Princeton and Rod, the closeted gay banker. At some points they are even having conversations with themselves.

The actors are clearly visible alongside the puppets but I ended up watching the puppets and not the people manipulating them. There are human characters too including rejected children's TV presenter, Gary, and husband and wife- Brian and Christmas Eve.

There was a slight sound issue towards the end of the show but this was quickly resolved and did not affect the professional and talented performance by the young, talented and energetic cast.

The theatre was full and some of the audience had seen it a number of times before. This is one to see again and again.
