'DECLARE your position on the community stadium'.

That's the challenge that has been set for all council election hopefuls by campaigners against the project at Wycombe Air Park.

In a letter published in the Bucks Free Press on Friday GASP's Keith Francis, said all candidates aiming to win seats on Wycombe District Council on May 5 should make it clear where they stand on the highly contentious issue.

His letter read: “There is no doubt that the proposed council stadium at Booker has provoked an enormous reaction from the citizens of this district.

“The debates on the Bucks Free Press website have been continuous for many months, resulting in visitors to the site reaching record levels.

“Wycombe Wanderers fans have been heard chanting ‘No to the Stadium’, and seen wearing black and white scarves to visibly display their disapproval for the project.

“People of all ages have been standing on cold dark winter's evenings demonstrating for the first time in their lives.

“Very recently of course this paper’s carefully validated survey indicated that over 80 per cent of its readership is against the stadium as a whole, the idea of building on green belt land and the council spending any further money on the project.

“Whichever side you sit on, the question there is no doubt that the council’s stadium is the biggest issue this district has known in years.

“Yet not all candidates have publicly published, clearly in a simple and straightforward way, their position on this project.

“They have not stated succinctly whether, after the election, their intention is to support or not support the stadium project.

“So let’s have it candidates, publish your position on this contentious issue in next week’s edition of this newspaper.

“State very clearly and concisely, are you for or against the council stadium project being built on green belt land at Booker.

“Undecided is of course an option, but after years of studies and debate and nearly half a million of taxpayers’ money already spent, you should have made up your mind by now.

“The electorate has, and we all need to know one way or the other. This is the GASP challenge.”
