EVERYTHING about Garsington Opera screams opulence from the beautifully presented brochure to the delightful setting of Wormsley Estate and the choice of three well prepared operas.

The move from Garsington to Oxford to Wormsley Estate near Stokenchurch was not a cheap one with £3 million already being raised, most of which came from private supporters.

Director of Administration and Finance, Nicola Creed, said: “We only launched the appeal last June. I think there were two or three supporters from the corpoarate sector but the rest of them are completely from private supporters, who know it is impossible without them.”

So what it is about Garsington which people love so much that they reached into their pockets to see it carry on.

The thought that has gone into the move itself proves how important opera is to the organisers from the impressive purpose-built theatre which will sit nestled in the corner of the beautiful deer park to the type of food which will be served during the interval.

Creed said: “When they are sitting inside- all be it hopefully snug and warm they can actually see out through the clear side which is on the garden side and they can hear the birds singing and experience an English evening in the summer whilst still being very much within a modern theatre setting.”

It has to be put up and come down every year and they have been working on the design for more than 18 months.

She said the change from Garsington to Wormsley is completely different. She said Garsington was a very pretty garden with a Jacobean Manor House.

She added: “Here at Wormsley it is completely different thing- a better landscape and the Chilterns are staggeringly beautiful. And the views out into the landscape are going to bet stunning for everyone in the theatre.”

And what about the operas? On offer is the British première of Antonio Vivaldi's La Verita In Cimento, Wolfgang Mozart's The Magic Flute and Giacomo Rossini's Il Turco in Italia.

Creed added: “Vivaldi is the unknown opera this year and it is always good to have a première. It will be beautiful. Every one knows the Four Seasons but do they know about his operas- very often the answer is no because it is not often performed.

“Part of what opera is all about is there is one opera which is well known like Magic Flute but we always have one that is much less known.”

Their caterers Chilli Pepper has gone in partnership with Jamie Oliver and organisers hope to see Oliver at one of the events.

Their education programme does on all year with workshops in surrounding schools in the area.

She said: “we hope we will be introducing them to opera and opera singers- getting them to sing along. We have done this now with various groups.”
